Position Summary The Associate Director is responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding individual donors and prospects capable of making major gifts of $100,000 or more in support of the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) and University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC). Reporting to the Senior Director of Development, Medical Education and Alumni Philanthropy, this position develops and executes strategic fundraising plans designed to secure philanthropic support for institutional priorities, academic programs, research initiatives, patient care, scholarships, faculty support, and other mission-driven opportunities. A key focus of the position will be building and expanding a comprehensive philanthropy program for residency and fellowship alumni across UMSOM and UMMC, with a concentration on Emergency Medicine. Working in concert with other team members focused on residency and fellowship alumni, the Associate Director will develop scalable strategies to identify, engage, cultivate, and solicit this important constituency while building a model that can be expanded across departments and programs. The Associate Director manages a portfolio of major gift prospects and donors and is accountable for achieving annual fundraising goals and performance metrics, including dollars raised, portfolio activity, proposal development, and substantive donor engagement. Through effective relationship management, the Associate Director evaluates donor interests and philanthropic capacity, develops cultivation and solicitation strategies, and guides prospects through the donor lifecycle to maximize philanthropic investment and long-term engagement. Working collaboratively with faculty, department leaders, volunteers, and philanthropy colleagues, the Associate Director represents the institution to alumni, grateful patients, friends, foundations, and community partners. The position serves as a trusted advisor to donors and institutional stakeholders, helping align philanthropic interests with strategic priorities while ensuring an exceptional donor experience. The Associate Director operates with a high degree of independence and professional judgment, applying specialized fundraising knowledge and best practices to develop innovative solutions, resolve complex issues, and advance fundraising objectives. The position contributes to the development and implementation of fundraising strategies, policies, and operational practices that support effective, compliant, and donor-centered philanthropy programs. In addition to managing a personal portfolio, the Associate Director collaborates across development functions including annual giving, stewardship, prospect management, donor relations, communications, and special events to support integrated fundraising efforts and achieve organizational goals. The position may provide guidance, mentorship, or training to colleagues and serves as an ambassador for the mission and values of Maryland Medicine.

Essential Functions:

Manage a personal portfolio of approximately 75-100 major and principal gift prospects and donors capable of making gifts of $100,000 or more, leading cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities. Develop and execute strategies to build a robust pipeline of residency and fellowship alumni across UMSOM and UMMC, with a focus on Emergency Medicine, creating approaches that can be scaled across additional departments and programs. Partner closely with Emergency Medicine leadership, faculty, residency and fellowship program leaders, and alumni to strengthen engagement, identify philanthropic opportunities, and build long-term relationships with former residents and fellows. Work collaboratively with the Senior Director of Development, Medical Education and Alumni Philanthropy and fellow residency, fellowship, and other alumni-focused team members to develop a coordinated, enterprise-wide approach to engaging this constituency. Establish annual and multi-year fundraising goals, participation metrics, donor retention goals, and strategic fundraising plans. Develop innovative donor pipeline strategies that move alumni, residents, fellows, grateful patients, and friends from engagement to philanthropy through coordinated annual, major, planned, and principal gift efforts. Utilize data analytics, prospect research, and fundraising performance metrics to identify opportunities for growth and continuous improvement. Partner with leadership, alumni boards, residency and fellowship alumni groups, and physician volunteer leaders to strengthen engagement, philanthropy, advocacy, and volunteer participation. Bachelor's degree required

Experience:

Four (4) years of progressive fundraising experience and one (1) year of managing major gift prospects in academic medicine, higher education, healthcare, or a similarly complex organization.

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year of related experience. In instances where specific education and/or experience is required only directly related education and/or experience may be substituted. Demonstrated success securing major gifts. Experience developing alumni, constituency-based, or pipeline-building fundraising programs preferred. Knowledge of medical education, physician training, residency and fellowship programs, Graduate Medical Education (GME), and academic medicine environments preferred. Strong understanding of major gifts, annual giving, planned giving, stewardship, and prospect management. Demonstrated ability to build productive partnerships with academic leadership, medical education offices, faculty, and healthcare executives. Excellent communication, relationship-building, presentation, and strategic planning skills. Ability to travel regionally and nationally as required.

Hiring Range:
