JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the CEO, the Veterinary Clinic Manager will work well independently, implement and ensure best health practices and standards of care in daily vet clinic operations for the animals of Watermelon Mountain Ranch ("WMR").

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Provides assessment and basic treatment to shelter animals, including physical examinations, diagnostic testing, and vaccinations (excluding rabies), assist vet with spay/neuter surgeries, and schedules further assessment, diagnostics, treatment and/or follow-up care by a veterinarian as necessary. Provides direct supervision to the Veterinary Assistant and instructs him/her on carrying out treatment plans, scheduling appointments and follow-up needs for shelter and foster pets, preparing for surgery days, and other functions of the Veterinary Assistant position. Provides written instructions for animal care staff regarding any special needs, including medical, dietary, and health restrictions. Performs and assists with the timely intake exams of animals. Refers animals for medical/surgical care at a partner veterinary hospital. Monitors veterinary-related spending and stays within budgeted amounts. Bathes animals and performs limited grooming tasks, such as nail trims, ear cleaning, and mat removal, as necessary. Ensures necessary animal vaccination, spay/neuter, medical, and treatment records are properly maintained. Ensures proper labeling and dating of medications, and ensures an accurate inventory of all medications in stock is maintained. Maintains accurate and timely medical records. Answers vet clinic phone line and responds to voicemails promptly. Checks individual and vet care team email daily and responds within 24 hours or passes along as necessary. Creates, updates, and otherwise maintains records, both physical and electronic. Follows all safety guidelines to ensure a safe work environment. Assists with fear-free animal restraint during animal intake exams, vaccination administration, and other veterinary care as instructed by contract or partner veterinarians. Performs other tasks as directed by CEO to ensure the successful operation of veterinary services at the shelter.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Has previous experience in a clinic or shelter setting. Preferred Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT), or in the process of registering with the State of New Mexico. Must work autonomously and confidently without the regular presence of a veterinarian. Models and embodies the WMR mission, vision, values, policies, and goals in actions and words. Must be professional, flexible, and able to handle difficult and sensitive situations with diplomacy and discretion.
