Number of Vacancies 1 Location Harlingen, Texas Department School of Medicine/ Revenue Cycle FTE 1.0 FLSA Non-Exempt Scope of Job Responsible for medical records release of information, compiling, processing, and managing patient health medical record information generated at UT Health RGV clinics/facilities within the Electronical Medical Records (EMR) system. Description of Duties Responsible for organizing, retrieving, and managing patients' health information data. Responsible for receipt and timely preparation of patient health medical record information related to internal and external correspondence and requests. These may include incoming mail, faxes, or email requests for medical records from patients, payers, attorneys, audits, subpoenas, or other court-orders. Ensures release of patient health information is complete, accurate, timely, compliant, and appropriate. This includes processing of affidavits and subpoenas, which follow legal regulations. Ensures compliance with records management bylaws, policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements. Acts as Liaison between internal/external health center staff, physicians, revenue cycle team, health plans, and internal/external legal representatives. Maintains confidentiality of medical records. Follows PHI and HIPAA guidelines. Monitors data integrity, research/verifies/merges duplicate medical records, and identifies/corrects patient overlays according to established protocols. Consistently meets established productivity, schedule adherence, and quality standards. Verifies and cross-references information in the EMR system to ensure document accuracy. Prepares, scans, and indexes protected patient health information documentation in electronic medical record. Keeps track of all medical record information being released as required. Ensures patient charts/medical records are retained, archived, or disposed of in accordance with all applicable bylaws and regulatory requirements. Pulls charts from medical records for all other departments per request. Makes copies and applies fees for copies as needed per department policy. Performs other duties as assigned. Supervision Received General supervision from assigned supervisor. Supervision Given Direct supervision of assigned staff. Required Education High School Diploma or equivalent Preferred Education Associate degree or one (1) year of college in Business Administration, Health Information Management or other closely related field.
Licenses/Certifications Preferred:
Current certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT). Required Experience Two (2) years of medical records technician experience and/or hospital or healthcare billing experience. Thorough knowledge of registration, insurance verification, prior authorizations, customer service, posting, collections, reimbursement, and payment reconciliation processes. Preferred Experience Bilingual (English/Spanish). Equipment Use of standard office equipment. Proficient with Electronic Health Record system. Microsoft Office applications preferred such as: MS Outlook & MS Excel and Word. Working Conditions Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties.
Office/healthcare environment:
some travel and weekend work is required. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Other Skill in data entry with minimal errors. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form. Strong attention to detail. Knowledge of insurance plans and referral procedures. Organization, communication and computing skills. Comprehensive knowledge of and compliance of HIPAA rules and regulations.
