Job Description

A mission-driven, growing nonprofit behavioral health organization in Tacoma is seeking two Temporary Health Information Technicians to support their Health Information Management (HIM) department.
Compensation:
$22-$29/hr
Availability:
8 AM - 4:30 PM, Monday-Friday.
Duration:
Approximately 90 days, and the role has the potential to convert to permanent employment. These roles focus on analyzing medical record data; maintaining the electronic filing of medical record documentation by verifying its completeness, accuracy, and entry into the computerized medical record system. Provides assistance to the Health Information Manager in writing detailed and complex workflow procedures as well as researching applicable state and federal laws to maintain new and current HIPAA-related and organizational policies. Key Responsibilities Organize medical record documentation in preparation for electronic sorting, scanning, and indexing. Review documents for completeness, correct identifiers, proper formatting, and accurate placement within client charts. Identify and help correct duplicate medical records, filing errors, and improperly categorized documentation. Process release-of-information requests and securely provide authorized records to clients, providers, managed care organizations, and other approved entities. Format, print, mail, fax, and electronically transmit medical records in compliance with HIPAA and applicable confidentiality requirements. Process incoming HIM emails, faxes, consents, treatment plan reviews, discharge summaries, and other medical documentation. Respond professionally to calls and emails from current and former clients, providers, and other external parties regarding medical records and release-of-information requests. Track document-processing activity and provide daily statistics to management. Research applicable state and federal regulations to help maintain accurate and current HIM and HIPAA policies. Analyze existing processes and assist with writing, documenting, and improving departmental workflows. Coordinate with other programs to troubleshoot documentation processes and improve staff productivity. Prepare and release records for audits, chart reviews, prior authorizations, subpoenas, and court orders in accordance with applicable laws. Collect and securely transport medical records from residential locations for quality review, processing, scanning, and importing. Coordinate the secure collection and destruction of confidential materials with the organization's shredding provider. Upload and process electronic consents and assist with creating consent forms. Respond to internal support tickets related to HIM functions. Troubleshoot document-sharing systems and provide HIM, HIPAA, and system training to employees. Maintain the confidentiality and security of medical records, protected health information, and related equipment. Perform other Health Information Management duties as assigned. Qualifications Completed degree in Health Information Management from a CAHIIM-accredited college or program. RHIT certification, or willing to obtain certification within 1 year of employment if/once offered permanent employment. Working knowledge of HIPAA, release-of-information requirements, and medical-record confidentiality. Previous experience with electronic health records, medical charts, scanning, or document indexing is preferred. Strong computer skills, including demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office. Excellent attention to detail, organization, and accuracy. Ability to identify documentation errors and follow established correction or escalation procedures. Ability to manage multiple priorities and handle confidential, sensitive, or challenging requests professionally. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Excellent customer service skills when working with clients, providers, and internal staff. Ability to travel locally between program locations as needed.
