Job Description

Unit Secretary Job Description FLSA Status:
[ ] Exempt [ X ] Non- exempt
POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the providers and clinical staff the Unit Secretary supports the unit by providing technical patient care services and support related to patients on the nursing unit. Additionally assists staff, providers, visitors and ancillary departments with routine patient care activities and clerical support as needed. Clerical support includes directing incoming calls and responding to patient calls, entering patient orders in the computer system, maintaining patient charts, unit files and secretarial supply levels and being responsible for maintaining a safe and orderly environment. The Unit Secretary is responsible for telemetry monitoring and alarm notification. The Unit Secretary is responsible for the daily operation of the nurse's station.
PATIENT POPULATION
Has contact with patients in a hospital setting, understands and demonstrates appropriate behavior when interacting with patients in the adult (18-65 years of age) and geriatric (65 and older) populations.
SUPERVISION
The Unit Secretary operates under the supervision and delegation of the Charge Nurse and reports to the Chief Clinical Officer.
EXPERIENCE
Familiarity with medical terminology Hospital experience as a patient care technician preferred
EDUCATION
High School Diploma or GED is required
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATIONS BLS
certification obtained within 90 days of hire.
ADDITIONAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Working computer knowledge with effective communication skills, verbal and written required.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND JOB FUNCTIONS
§ Under the direction of the providers and clinical staff, assist providers and nursing staff in the treatment of patients on the Nursing Unit. § If necessary, provides basic patient care technician duties under the direction of licensed staff to include vital signs, activities of daily living assistance, intakes and outputs, patient weight, transport, and resuscitation assistance. § Answer phone courteously and routes calls and messages accurately and to the appropriate people in a timely and efficient manner. § Answers patient calls promptly and courteously and relays patient needs to the appropriate person promptly while recognizing and appropriately responding to the urgency of patient requests. § Monitors telemetry and relays alarms promptly. § Directs visitors to patient rooms in a courteous manner while maintaining confidentiality. § Maintains medical record in the correct form and order and accurately post reports to the record in a timely manner. § Enter all pertinent information into the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) upon admission through discharge. § Responds to code alarms correctly and immediately. Performs overhead paging as requested. All paging is clear, concise and professional. § Stocks patient care areas and nursing unit areas, including linens, as needed and requested.

cont. § Maintains the nurses' station in a neat, orderly manner. § Participates in ordering and the economical use of supplies and equipment. § Maintains the organization of the patients' records by reducing charts, adding stationery and labeling all documents. § Documentation meets current standards and policies. § Performs other duties as assigned, within the Unit Secretary scope of practice.
