Job Summary:

The Certified Medication Technician plays a crucial role in the delivery of safe, effective, and compliant medication management services for residents receiving substance use disorder treatment in a structured, 24-hour care setting (Level 3.5 & 3.7 ASAM). Working under the supervision of a licensed nurse, the CMA is responsible for medication administration, health monitoring, accurate documentation, and support of medical services in accordance with DMAS, DBHDS, and CARF standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Patient Care and Monitoring Administer scheduled and PRN medications in accordance with physicians' orders and facility protocols. Document medication administration, including PRNs and refusal or side effects, in real-time in the Electronic Health Record (EHR). Accurately complete Medication Administration Records (MARs) and Medication Update Notes. Perform and document vital signs as per protocol or physician order. Monitor patients for adverse reactions, side effects, or medication efficacy and promptly report findings to nursing staff.

Utilize withdrawal monitoring tools including:

COWS (Clinical Opiate Withdrawal Scale) CIWA (Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment for Alcohol) Assist with medication ordering, storage, and inventory control. Ensure medication cart and storage areas are secure and maintained per facility and regulatory guidelines. Maintain accurate and current documentation of patient medical and medication records. Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and contribute to treatment planning as appropriate. Communicate clearly and professionally with patients and staff. Adhere to infection control practices, confidentiality regulations (HIPAA), and all relevant clinical and ethical standards. Support patient wellness by providing basic health education and reinforcing medication adherence. Assist with activities of daily living for patients requiring extra support, ensuring a comfortable and respectful care experience. Medication Administration and Management Administer prescribed medications according to treatment plans and established protocols, documenting each dose accurately. Assist in the management of medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for patients, adhering to safety and compliance standards. Monitor patients for medication side effects or adverse reactions, notifying the RN or physician as necessary. Support in Detoxification and Residential Care Process Assist patients through the detox process by providing physical and emotional support, maintaining a calm and reassuring presence. Monitor and report withdrawal symptoms to ensure appropriate interventions are applied, enhancing patient comfort and safety. Work collaboratively with RNs and clinical staff to manage detox protocols, following orders precisely and communicating changes in patient status. Patient and Family Education Educate patients and families on medication schedules, potential side effects, and health management during recovery. Provide patients with information on self-care practices, hygiene, and infection prevention, promoting healthy routines. Answer questions about the treatment process, offering encouragement and reassurance to patients and their families. Collaboration with Multidisciplinary Team Collaborate with RNs, physicians, counselors, and other team members to support patients' individualized treatment plans. Participate in team meetings, providing updates on patient progress and discussing any concerns with clinical staff. Communicate effectively with the care team to ensure continuity and consistency of care. Supportive to the company's vision and approach of longer lengths of stay and positive outcomes for lasting recovery Compliance and Documentation Document all care activities, including vital signs, medication administration, and patient observations, in the electronic health record (EHR) system. Ensure adherence to state and federal regulations, accreditation standards, and facility policies in all nursing practices. Participate in compliance initiatives, quality audits, and adherence checks as directed by nursing leadership. Health and Safety Management Maintain a clean, safe, and therapeutic environment by adhering to infection control practices and facility safety policies. Report any hazards or safety concerns to the RN or nursing supervisor and participate in risk prevention measures. Educate patients on health and safety practices, supporting them in adopting safe and responsible behaviors.

Qualifications:

High School Diploma or equivalent required. Must possess current Medication Aide certification in the state of Virginia. Certification must be valid on the VADHP site in Virginia. Minimum of 1 year of experience in a behavioral health or substance use treatment setting is preferred. Current CPR/First Aid certification. Familiarity with

ASAM 3.5 & 3.7

levels of care and substance use disorder treatment preferred. Must pass state/federal background check, TB screening, and drug screen as required by

DBHDS/DMAS.

Knowledge of addiction treatment protocols, detox, residential and withdrawal management is preferred.

Competencies:

Knowledge of medication administration protocols and safety standards. Understanding of substance use disorders and co-occurring conditions. Proficiency in documenting in Electronic Health Records (EHR). Strong observational skills to monitor client health and behavior. Cultural competency and trauma-informed care awareness.
