GENERAL FUNCTION

This position serves as a training position. The Mental Health Specialist I will develop skills by assisting in implementing individual and group programs within a unit/cottage.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES 1.

Provides general direction and supervision to residents within the unit/cottage, including one-on-one attention to assigned residents, in accordance with the individual unit/cottage programs. This includes the ability to physically restrain acting out clients per safety and behavior management requirements. 2. Directly supervise residents in performance of daily chores and personal hygiene practices. 3. Assists in the preparation and/or serving of meals to residents in the unit/cottage when appropriate to the unit/cottage program. 4. Under the guidance of senior staff may assist in the administration of medications. 5. Participates with residents in cottage/unit recreational activities, as well as other planned recreational programs. 6. Transports youth to prescribed off-campus activities. 7. Assists in the implementation of group programs. 8. Provides support in maintaining cottage appearance, record keeping and other related activities. 9. Documents shift activities and maintains appropriate records including all data needed for service documentation. Completes appropriate forms and paperwork and maintains and updates hard copy and/or computerized files/records. 10. Supervises youth required to be in unit instead of school due to illness/injury. 11. Participates in unit/cottage team meetings. 12. Performs other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE A. REQUIRED

1. High School Diploma/G.E.D. 2. Per DCFS regulations, must be at least 21 years of age. 3. First Aid/CPR certified within 90 days of employment. 4. Valid Driver's License and good driving record.

B. DESIRED

1. Previous experience in a residential setting. 2. Knowledge of crisis intervention and physical restraints.
