Canandaigua, NY (Shill Family Center at Family Promise of Ontario County)
Compensation:
$18.50/hour Family Promise of Ontario County (FPOC) serves families in Ontario County, NY who are experiencing housing instability through multiple programs of care that includes emergency shelter, eviction prevention, shelter diversion, and stabilization services. Our team works collaboratively within trauma-informed care best practices to maintain a safe, clean, and supportive living environment for every family we serve. We are committed to treating each guest with dignity, compassion, and respect, using a strengths-based, family centered approach that honors resilience and promotes stability. The Daytime Resident Assistant (RA) supports the daily operations of the shelter during active hours, helping to create a structured, engaging, and supportive environment for families. This role involves frequent interaction with guests, supporting routines, maintaining the facility, and collaborating closely with staff and service providers.
Duties Include:
Guest Support & Engagement
  • Provide consistent, trauma-informed support to families throughout the day.
  • Build positive, respectful relationships with guests while maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Support families in following shelter schedules, routines, and expectations.
  • Provide informal guidance and mentorship to children and youth; help maintain a safe and structured environment.
  • Reinforce life skills such as cleanliness, organization, and shared living responsibilities. Daily Operations & Routine Support
  • Help implement daily shelter schedules (meals, school/work departures, quiet hours, programming).
  • Support coordination of meals (set-up, monitoring shared kitchen/dining areas, clean-up).
  • Assist with intake and orientation of new families, including reviewing shelter guidelines.
  • Support guest sign-in/out, curfew tracking, and attendance documentation.
  • Assist with transportation coordination or communication around appointments when needed. Shelter Environment
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming space throughout the shift.
  • Complete room turnovers, laundry support, and housekeeping tasks as needed.
  • Monitor shared spaces to ensure appropriate use, especially for children's safety.
  • Identify and report maintenance or supply needs promptly. Safety & Crisis Response
  • Monitor the facility and guest interactions to maintain a safe environment.
  • Address conflicts using de-escalation and problem-solving techniques.
  • Enforce shelter rules consistently and respectfully.
  • Respond to crises and notify managers as needed. Administrative & Team Duties
  • Complete detailed shift notes, incident reports, and daily logs.
  • Answer phones, greet visitors, and manage building access.
  • Collaborate with case managers and other staff to support family goals.

Skills and Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills for collaborating with the team.
  • Experience working with diverse populations
  • Valid driver's license, reliable transportation and excellent driving record.
  • Ability to pass several background checks.
  • Compassion and patience for working with people in crisis.
  • Good character and judgement decisions, including displaying behavior appropriate to a mentor who works in close contact with children.
Agency Expectations:
  • Complies with agency standards of conduct and professionalism.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the program, mission and services of FPOC.
  • Complies with all policies and procedures in Employee Handbooks.
  • Is punctual and consistent in reporting for scheduled work shifts to assure coverage.
  • Maintains client confidentiality.
  • Is able to work in an alcohol and drug free environment.
  • A 90-day probationary period applies to all new hires.
Compensation:
  • $18.50/hour
