Job Overview Under the direction of the psychiatrist, the TMS Technician provides technical and patient-support services for transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) treatments. The Technician prepares patients and equipment, operates TMS equipment within approved protocols, monitors patients during treatment, documents treatment-related information, and promptly reports concerns to the responsible licensed psychiatrist. The Technician does not independently diagnose, assess, prescribe, establish treatment plans, or alter clinical treatment outside approved orders and protocols. Duties Provides TMS treatments according to the authorized treatment order, approved protocol, manufacturer instructions, and organizational policies. Verifies patient identity, treatment order, schedule, and required pre-treatment information before each session. Prepares the treatment room and performs required equipment checks and setup. Explains the treatment process within the scope of the position and promotes patient comfort and adherence. Assists with positioning and coil placement as trained and permitted by the device manufacturer and organizational policy. Operates TMS equipment only after required training and competency validation and only within authorized treatment parameters. Observes patients during treatment; pauses/stops treatment when required by protocol and immediately reports concerning symptoms or adverse events to the responsible licensed psychiatrist. Activates emergency procedures when indicated and assists with patient safety during urgent situations. Documents treatment date/time, protocol and parameters, patient tolerance, symptoms/adverse events, and treatment completion in the medical record. Maintains confidentiality and protects patient information in accordance with HIPAA, Pennsylvania mental health confidentiality requirements, and organizational policy. Communicates relevant observations, missed/incomplete treatments, and treatment concerns to the psychiatrist. Maintains a safe, clean treatment environment and follows infection prevention, emergency, workplace safety, and TMS equipment safety procedures. Performs routine equipment checks and promptly reports malfunction or safety concerns; does not perform unauthorized repairs or modifications. Responsible for scheduling, patient flow, treatment reminders, and coordination of TMS appointments. Uses respectful, trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and recovery-oriented interactions. Participates in staff meetings, quality improvement, competency validation, and required TMS/behavioral health education. Recognizes the limits of the position and obtains clinical assistance whenever a patient's needs exceed the Technician's training or assigned responsibilities.

EDUCATION/TRAINING

High school diploma or GED required. Associate degree or bachelor's degree in a healthcare, behavioral health, psychology, nursing, medical assisting, or related field preferred. Completion of manufacturer-specific TMS training and organizational competency validation is required before independent operation of TMS equipment.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Prior experience in a behavioral health, medical, psychiatric, nursing, medical assistant, patient-care, or TMS setting preferred. Previous TMS experience is preferred but not required when the employee successfully completes required training and competency validation.
