SUMMARY:
Under general supervision of Lead Technologist of Nuclear Medicine, but according to established policies and procedures, performs a variety of technical tasks designed to facilitate the use of in-vivo Nuclear Medicine procedures by physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of illness and injuries. Calculates correct dosage of radiopharmaceuticals and administers to the patient. Explains the nature of each test procedure to patient in order to allay fears and anxieties. Assists patient into assuming the correct anatomical position for display of body areas to be studied. Calculates and administers to correct dosages of radiopharmaceuticals, and administers by intravenous or intra-muscular injection, ingestion, or inhalation of radioactive gases, in order to produce the desired concentration of isotopes in the specific body area. Operates gamma cameras and scanners in order to produce desired images and measure concentrations of radioactive isotopes in specific body areas. Adjusts controls according to knowledge of standard procedures in order to ensure that examination results are desired quality. Calibrates and conducts quality control checks on all equipment used within the department. Performs administrative and clerical tasks with Nuclear Medicine such as preparing patient charts, scheduling tests, recording data or radiopharmaceuticals and calibration tests, and completing patient records. Participates in Nuclear Medicine training program by demonstrating and observing clinical techniques to students. Maintains order and cleanliness of examination and laboratories.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Completion of accredited training program in Nuclear Medicine Technology is required. Current and valid license from the Department of Health to practice in the State of Rhode Island. Registry by at least one of the following bodies:- American Registry of Radiologic Technologists
- Nuclear Medicine.
- Nuclear Medicine Technologists' Certification Board.
EXPERIENCE
One to three months progressively more responsible job related experience is required.WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Regularly exposed to radioactive materials, but there is little chance of injury when established safety procedures are followed. Works in Nuclear Medicine Department where there is little discomfort due to noise and dust, but some discomfort due to heat from testing equipment. Work requires considerable amounts of walking and standing. The physical ability to lift and/or position patients.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
