DEPARTMENT
Medical Staff The Nurse Practitioner is an independent healthcare provider who, working collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary health team will be responsible for providing comprehensive care to both well and ill patients. The Nurse Practitioner will educate patients and/or their families to promote wellness, prevent health problems, maintain current health and intervene in acute or chronic illness. The Nurse Practitioner will seek opportunities for professional growth through participation in continuing education, staff development and hospital committees. All duties and responsibilities must be accomplished with the guidelines of the unit, department, division and the hospital in accordance with the Nurse Practitioner-Physician Written Agreement required and approved by the LA State Board of Nursing. The Nurse Practitioner is granted affiliate staff privileges at LKMC and these privileges list specific tasks and are reviewed annually. The Nurse Practitioner will have a direct relationship with the physician services to which assigned. Supervision is provided by the LAK Medical Director. On-call may be required. Required Education A Master of Science degree in nursing with a Nurse Practitioner clinical tract is necessary for those practitioners completing an advanced practice nursing program prior to January 1, 1997. Possession of a valid Louisiana license required by the State of Louisiana to practice Advanced Practice Nursing. Certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), the American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC) or any other credentialing agency recognized by the State of Louisiana. Required Experience Five (5) years of related clinical nursing experience prior to entering an advanced practice nursing program in such areas as intensive care, emergency departments, high volume clinic settings or other high-volume, high-complexity in-patient services. Preferred Experience Two (2) years of experience as Nurse Practitioner with prescription-writing authority as permitted under the law.
