Job Description

About Leara's Abundance Leara's Abundance (LA) is a nonprofit behavioral health organization located in Gaithersburg, Maryland, providing trauma-informed, culturally responsive, evidence-based mental health services. We believe in helping clients create their own path toward healing through ethical, collaborative, and person-centered care. Leara's Abundance works in partnership with Beyond Healing Counseling & Consultation, LLC (BHCC) , an affiliated behavioral health practice. While the Medical Director position is with Leara's Abundance , the organizations share certain administrative and clinical resources, and the Medical Director may provide or support psychiatric services for clients served across both organizations, as applicable to the role. As our psychiatric services continue to develop, we are looking for a Medical Director who wants to do more than fill a title. We are seeking someone who cares about the quality of the services being provided, brings integrity and sound clinical judgment to their work, and is willing to contribute their experience and ideas as the organization grows. About the Role The Medical Director is a part-time clinical and medical leadership position for a licensed Psychiatrist or Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) . This is a direct-care and leadership role . The Medical Director will maintain a psychiatric caseload while also helping provide medical oversight, consultation, and direction for the organization's psychiatric and medication-management services. The Medical Director will conduct psychiatric evaluations, diagnose and treat behavioral health conditions, prescribe and manage psychotropic medications, provide follow-up care, and collaborate with therapists and other members of the treatment team. The role also includes participation in medical/psychiatric policy review, clinical consultation, quality improvement, prescribing review, and the continued development of safe and effective psychiatric services. Because we aim to serve clients across the lifespan , we are particularly interested in candidates who have experience working with children/adolescents as well as adults. Experience in emergency psychiatry, inpatient psychiatric care, family medicine/integrated care, or other settings requiring broad clinical assessment and decision-making is highly valued. Who We Are Looking For The ideal candidate combines strong psychiatric knowledge with clinical judgment, accountability, integrity, and collaborative leadership . We want someone who can assess the whole clinical picture rather than approaching medication management as an isolated service. This means being willing to ask questions, review available information, recognize when additional medical or psychiatric evaluation is needed, collaborate with other professionals, and make appropriate referrals or recommendations for a higher level of care when necessary. We are also looking for someone who is comfortable with clinical accountability and continuous improvement . Prescribing practices are subject to routine quality and peer review, including independent external review of prescribing practices and competencies. The Medical Director should be receptive to professional feedback and willing to use review findings to strengthen clinical practice, patient safety, and organizational quality. Most importantly, we want someone who is interested in helping us build well . Leara's Abundance is growing, and not every process is intended to remain exactly as it is today. We value a Medical Director who can work within established requirements while also identifying gaps, offering thoughtful solutions, helping strengthen systems, and contributing to the long-term vision for psychiatric services. This Role May Not Be the Right Fit If... This position may not be a good fit if you are seeking a prescribing-only position , prefer to practice independently without meaningful collaboration with the broader treatment team, or are uncomfortable with routine review of prescribing practices and clinical quality. It may also not be the right environment for someone who prefers to enter an organization where every system has already been built, and there is little opportunity—or expectation—to contribute to its development. We are looking for someone who communicates concerns, follows through on responsibilities, is open to feedback, takes ownership of their work, and demonstrates integrity even when no one is watching. Application Instructions — Please Read Carefully In addition to submitting your CV/resume, please complete the following two application components. 1. Video Response — Clinical Leadership & Approach Please submit a brief 2-4 minute video addressing: Based on your experience, what does effective psychiatric and medical leadership look like in a growing outpatient behavioral health organization? Please discuss how your experience has prepared you to provide direct psychiatric care across different ages and/or levels of care while also serving as a collaborative medical leader. You may draw from experience in outpatient behavioral health, emergency psychiatry, inpatient psychiatry, family medicine/integrated care, or other relevant settings. A phone or computer recording is sufficient; professional video production is not expected. 2.
