A Nursing Assistant provides hospital and nursing home patients with basic care and assists them with daily activities. Helps patients with dressing, washing, and feeding. May perform basic medical care under the direction of a nurse or other medical professional. These roles typically require completion of a regional agency-approved training program in order to obtain a certification before practicing.

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) provides care to the residents of the household to meet their daily needs and enable them to function at the highest possible level. While this care is provided under the leadership of a professional nurse, the caregiver is the residents' closest advocate in the household. The caregiver promotes the residents' psychosocial well-being through meaningful relationship building, and works with the household team to meet other social service needs of the resident and of the household. Always providing support, friendship and kindness for each of the household members. The caregiver plans and facilitates social activities for residents of the household which provide meaningful ways to spend time as recreation, exercise, relationship building and fun. The caregiver also supports the household homemaker in maintaining a clean safe household environment and in caring for the residents' personal laundry. All caregiver tasks are performed in accordance with current standards, guidelines and regulations and in safe and efficient manner.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
___ 1. Attends to all resident personal hygiene and personal care needs, including but not limited to grooming, hygiene, dining and nutritional, mobility, elimination, psychosocial and safety needs, following approved policies and procedures and oral and written instructions from administration. Supports residents in self-care and provides care as necessary for those unable to care for their own needs. ___ 2. Follows proper hand washing procedures, infection control, sanitation and safety standards of practice in all work and activities. ___ 3. Provides restorative therapy under the leadership of the therapy and nursing professionals and in accordance with the residents care plan. ___ 4. Observes the residents closely, identifying changing needs and conditions at first indication, and reports immediately to nursing or household leadership as appropriate. ___ 5. Participates actively in the resident's care planning and care conference, serving as the residents' closest advocate in directing their care and honoring their preferences. Consistently works with all household team members, led by resident and family preference to meet the needs and desires of all household residents. ___ 6. Keeps all team members, including family members, residents, and extended family members, involved in creating and maintaining the neighborhood's physical environment. ___ 7. Maintains appropriate documentation in support of care delivered. ___ 8. Plans and organizes social activities for individual residents, and small groups in the household, making any necessary arrangements to ensure success of the activities. Seeks opportunities throughout the day to facilitate spontaneous activities of resident choice and household preference; accompanies resident in activities of choice. ___ 9. Participates in rounds and shift to shift communication. ___10. Participates in assuring regulatory compliance is met. ___11. Attends staff in-services, trainings and meetings as required. ___12. Maintains a courteous, professional relationship with all other organization staff and volunteers. ___13. Recognizes confidential matters and does not divulge confidential information or material to anyone not authorized to receive such information. ___14. Reports to, and maintains open communication with household coordinator, clinical coordinator and or the licensed nurse assigned to the house. ___15. Must be flexible with work hours, may be expected to work various shifts and weekends. Abides by the attendance policy. ___16. QUALIFICATIONS
Must be a Certified Nursing Assistant (must successfully pass CNA class if not currently certified). Must have the desire to work in a geriatric setting. Must be able to communicate effectively with staff, residents and visitors. Must have capacity and willingness to learn Conflict resolution skills (able to confront others gently but firmly, can speak clearly about issues, can articulate expectations, can resolve conflicts with others and mediate between others). Has organizational skills previously demonstrated via past experiences with any of the following: responsibilities, team participation; action steps, follow-up, written compliance, and/or goal setting. If new to these competencies, must have demonstrated willingness to learn and follow directions in a new job. Must be able to react quickly in an emergency. Must be able to lift and support 50 pounds.
