A Nursing Assistant provides hospital and nursing home patients with basic care and assists them with daily activities. Helps patients with dressing, washing, and feeding. May perform basic medical care under the direction of a nurse or other medical professional. These roles typically require completion of a regional agency-approved training program in order to obtain a certification before practicing.
Restorative Aide (CNA) Position Overview Responsible for assisting residents with daily exercises as identified by the nursing and rehabilitation departments in an effort to promote physical well-being and use of arms, legs and other body functions in accordance to laws, regulations and facility guidelines.
Basic Qualifications Education & Certification:
High school diploma or equivalent; successfully completed a state-approved Certified Nursing Assistance program, possess a current certification in good standing or be able to obtain certification within four months of employment, if allowable by the state; must have CPR certification.
Skills & Requirements:
Must possess the ability to read, write and speak the English language, communicate resident condition to others and make independent decisions as needed; must have common working knowledge of all rules, laws and regulations as defined by the state as it relates to skilled nursing; must be patient, friendly, courteous and respectful to residents in any situation, including difficult ones; must be able to move frequently throughout the workday, answer resident call bells, assist with baths, showers, toileting, feeding and personal grooming of the residents; must be able to handle sensitive situations related to the emotional well-being of the residents with patience, dignity and respect; must be able to lift 40 lbs floor to waist; lift 20 lbs waist to shoulder; lift and carry 40 lbs; and push/pull 40 lbs.
Experience:
Minimum of six months experience in a long-term care or other geriatric care environment is preferred. Working Conditions Works specifically in the nursing department, rehabilitation, resident rooms, shower rooms, etc.; bends, lifts, sits, stands and moves frequently throughout the shift; deals with frequent interruptions and possibly upset residents and family members; works regularly scheduled shifts with possible weekends, holidays and other hours based on resident needs; primary responsibility is care of residents but also deals with visitors, government personnel, etc.; participates in required continuing education programs; subject to odors, falls, burns and exposure to infectious diseases, waste, etc., including AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses.

Follows safety program guidelines; immediately reports accidents and incidents to supervisors; identifies unsafe working areas and promptly reports to supervisors; promotes safety by working as safely and efficiently as possible; monitors resident rooms to ensure it is clean and neat at all times; consistently follows infection control and universal precautions and other guidelines; identifies and corrects or reports hazardous conditions to supervisors; understands facility emergency and evacuation protocols.

Completes assignments in an organized fashion by the end of scheduled shifts; operates with flexibility and shows attention to detail when recording information in resident charts.

Essential Job Duties 1. Assists residents with daily range of motion and strength training exercise routines as provided by nursing and rehabilitation. 2. Provides quality nursing care to residents, including transfers and ambulation. 3. Assists residents in the care of prosthesis or amputations. 4. Ensures proper bed and wheelchair positioning of residents. 5. Provides assistance to residents with eating and swallowing exercises. 6. Delivers meals and performs feeding assistance to residents. 7. Ensures cleanliness of water pitchers and provides refills of fresh water as needed. 8. Performs vital sign monitoring/charting and observes residents for changes in condition or behavior and reports to nursing supervisors. 9. Provides assistance with lifting, turning, moving, transporting or transferring residents. 10. Monitors incontinent residents to ensure bed linens and clothing are clean and dry. 11. Reduces the risk of bedsores by promptly reporting observations of skin breakdown and pressure areas. 12. Communicates changes and ensures plan of care if being followed through effectively recording changes in charts. Other Job Duties 1. Adheres to facility admission, discharge and transfer policies and prepares resident rooms for arrival. 2. Answers resident call lights promptly and courteously. 3. Assists residents with toileting and bed pans and collects urine, stool and sputum samples as directed. 4. Promotes inter-departmental teamwork to meet resident needs. 5. Promotes an environment of positive public relations by displaying a calm, caring, warm and friendly atmosphere in department and on each shift. 6. Provides training to new CNAs upon request. 7. Arrives to work as scheduled and makes rounds with previous shift. 8. Attends required in-service training programs.
