Job Description
Overview Assists the Nurse Manager in the coordination of nursing care on a shift within a specific unit. Assists with the supervision of all nursing activities related directly or indirectly to patient care. Is cognizant of the philosophy, standards, objectives and policies of the Department of Nursing and the Hospital Center. Responsibilities
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with patients, visitors, and other employees. Interacts professionally, courteously, and appropriately with patients, visitors and other employees. Behaves in a manner consistent with maintaining and furthering a positive public perception of Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center and its employees.
- Contributes to and participates in the Performance/Quality Improvement activities of the assigned department.
Risk Management:
Incident and Occurrence Reporting, (c) Infection Control Policies and Procedures and (d) Patient and Customer Service.- Administers nursing care based on scientific and therapeutic principles of nursing and according to the physician's orders.
- Demonstrates a competent level of technical skill.
- Assists in coordinating the development, planning, implementation and evaluation of the nursing regimen for patients within a given unit.
- Coordinates staff activities in the performance of the nursing process.
- Ensures patient needs are met through assignment of appropriate classification of personnel.
- Assists staff in the planning, implementation and on-going evaluation of the nursing process.
- Participates in the Patient Classification system.
- Participates in patient care conferences.
- Reviews and analyzes trends pertinent to the delivery of nursing care within the unit and recommends relevant innovations.
- Evaluates current and changing needs of the nursing unit and makes recommendations to the Nurse Manager.
- Participates in the planning, development and implementation of alternative approaches to the delivery of nursing care.
- Participates in relevant conferences and seminars.
- Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care abased on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety and related criteria, appropriate to the age of patients served in assigned area.
- Identifies physical, behavioral and emotional characteristics typical for the age group.
- Modifies approaches based on patient age specific needs and responses to treatment.
- Provides care for patients based on age-specific needs.
- Uses communication techniques, which are age appropriate.
- Assists members of the nursing staff to develop his/her nursing performance by: Assessing their needs.
- Giving instruction and guidance in areas where development is needed.
- Provides input to the Nurse Manager in the evaluation process of staff.
- In consultation with the Nurse manager, provide feedback and documentation to members of the nursing staff regarding adherence to job obligations.
- Recommends the progression of new employees form one phase of unit-based orientation to another.
- Assists in preparing time schedules.
- Assists in daily staffing by recommending staff or supplemental staff coverage.
- Makes recommendations regarding his/her schedule to meet the responsibilities of the position.
- Identifies needs to the clerical staff.
- Recommends changes in nursing practice and policy through Nurse Manager or nursing committee.
- Behavior reflects adherence to the Policies and Procedures of the Department of Nursing and the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center.
- Participates in the department's Performance Improvement activities.
- Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information.
- Collaborates with the Nurse Manager to maintain adequate material resources.
- Verifies that equipment is safe and appropriately utilized.
- Assesses that supplies are appropriately utilized.
- Supervises personnel in absence of Nurse Manager.
- Responsible to the Nurse Manager of the unit.
- Collaborates with educators and staff in meeting patient and unit needs.
- Promotes inter and intra departmental communications to provide continuity of patient care.
- Participates in departmental committees.
- Utilizes learning resources.
- Participates in the development of other staff members.
- Meets regulatory licensure and annual health assessment requirements.
- Demonstrates a professional, courteous and respectful attitude in dealing with patients, families and significant others.
- Displays courtesy, tack and patience during interactions with all members of the hospital staff and extended community.
- Projects a professional image through behavior, grooming and attire.
- May be required to perform other duties as assigned within the scope of practice. Qualifications
- Minimum of two (2) years nursing experience preferred.
- Demonstrates leadership abilities.
- Demonstrates commitment to continuing professional development through appropriate continuing education.
- NYS Registered Professional Nurse License
- Bachelor's in Nursing or related field
