DEFINITION
Nursing instructors, also known as nurse educators, are professionals with the education and practical skills to prepare nursing students for entry in to practice. Faculty is accountable to the Director of Vocational Nursing for the implementation of the approved curriculum based on the mission and philosophy of the nursing program and the Institute of Technology.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Nursing instructors lead, develop, and organize teaching curricula and programs that will best prepare nurses for the current challenges of the profession. This instruction can take place in the classroom, skills lab, during simulation, and also during clinical rotations at healthcare facilities approved by the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT).

Stay current in their subject matter through professional development, involvement in professional organizations, and attending professional meetings, conferences, or workshops. Learn and use technology to enhance teaching and the educational experience when appropriate. Teaching Performance (classroom setting) Teach a course load as assigned, including preparation for and instruction of theory classes and clinical laboratory experiences. Utilize principles of teaching that recognize the characteristics of adult learner. Plan and organize instruction in ways that maximize student learning Assess effectiveness of teaching through direct and indirect methods. Include psychosocial needs in outlining nursing care. Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of the IOT students. Modify, where appropriate, instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse student needs. Utilize a variety of teaching methods including lecture, case study, video, demonstration, small group discussion, work sheets, student presentations, role play, patient care simulations, and guest speakers to communicate subject matter to students. Maintain consistency with instructional plan as approved by the BVNPT Develop, update, and post course syllabi in a timely manner. Teaching Performance (clinical setting) Assume complete responsibility for up to 15 students in the clinical facilities. Teach a course load as assigned, including preparation for and instruction of theory classes and clinical laboratory experiences. Plan and organize instruction in ways that maximize student learning Clarify daily clinical expectations with students during pre-conference. Clarify student placement and expectations with clinical facility staff. Make patient/student assignments that meet both clinical objectives and patient needs. Direct students in data collection and integration into their clinical paperwork; provide resources to students to ensure critical thinking through the nursing process. Coordinate with Clinical site a daily plan to best observe, instruct, and evaluate students. Direct post conference to ensure application of theoretical content to clinical experiences; provide opportunities for students to share learned experiences and verbalize feelings. Evaluate student progress and give feedback weekly. Provide clear objectives for improvement as needed. Instructor is to provide immediate feedback of clinical performance following observation of skill. Maintain consistency with instructional plan as approved by the BVNPT Curriculum development, revision, and evaluation Participate in monthly faculty meetings Collaborate with other faculty on suggestions for curriculum evaluation and revision Contribute to the selection and development of instructional materials in accordance with course objectives. Participate in community activities to promote the Institute of Technology Assess the instructional needs of students in the program and help coordinate the development of a plan to address these needs.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of state and federal laws governing the education and licensure of vocational/practical nurses Leadership in both academic and workforce areas Ability to establish collegial relationships with peers Ability to be an effective liaison and to maintain a harmonious relationship at various healthcare facilities. Maintain confidentiality of student information Exercise stewardship of college facilities and materials
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Current active unencumbered RN license to practice professional nursing in California Valid California driver's license Approval by the BVNPT Education Baccalaureate degree from an accredited school (Master's degree preferred) Have completed a course in teaching the Adult Learner Experience A minimum of two years' experience as a registered nurse within the last five years Other Current American Heart Association
BCLS WORKING CONDITIONS
Work under pressure of constant deadlines with frequent interruptions. Work collaboratively in a team environment. Noise exposure under 65 decibels, roughly that of a normal conversation or a ringing telephone. Schedule changes may occur based on business needs. May be required to travel to locations other than assigned site.
