Operating Room Charge Registered Nurse
REPORTS TO
(TITLE): Nurse Manager/Director of Nursing/Chief Nursing Officer

DESCRIPTION OF POSITION
Responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and coordinating patient care during the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative phase of care. Manages the daily operations, scheduling, and staff coordination of the perioperative and procedure units. Responsibilities include within the general surgical suites, ECT suite, TMS suite and gastro-intestinal (GI) procedure suites. Participates with other facility team members to provide optimal patient care and efficient patient flow, taking into consideration the population specific needs for patients at all stages of life. The Working Charge Nurse oversees daily shift operations and patient flow while maintaining full clinical competency to circulate in the Operating Room and cross-cover the PACU as staffing and patient volumes require.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
:
- Exhibits the values of ACH while providing direct patient care across the perioperative, procedural, medical-surgical, and adult behavioral health continuum. This position is expected to maintain competencies and work in all of these specialty areas of nursing care and serve as an expert resource to other team members.
- Assists Nurse Manager in performing assigned quality improvement activities to ensure regulatory compliance within these areas of nursing care.
- Performs unit operations activities including, but not limited to: unit-based quality control testing, completion of logs, procedural instrument inventory support/maintenance, and procedural equipment quality control activities.
- Interacts professionally and communicates clearly with providers, administration, and other team members serving as a resource person for other personnel of the facility and for community health care programs.
- Actively participates in problem solving, goal setting and the development, implementation and evaluation of programs and/or projects.
- Ensures assigned specialty clinical units are in compliance with all local, state and federal laws and regulations and Joint Commission standards at all times.
- Participates on various facility committees as requested.
- Displays good theoretical and practical knowledge of pathology and psychopathology and appropriate treatment techniques for each type of routinely performed medical-surgical and procedural therapy.
- Actively follows policies and procedures to ensure that the facility meets the needs of the client population.
- Owns quality client care through self-practice behaviors that are in compliance with regulatory requirements, professional standards, facility policies and procedures and local, state and federal law.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
The following represent the minimum education, licensure, knowledge, experience, skills and abilities for the specialty procedures registered nurse position:
Education and Licensing:
- Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing required, Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN
- preferred
- Registered Nurse
- RN•Current license to practice in the State of California required.
- Basic Life Support Certification-BLS
- required.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support
- ACLS
- required.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support-PALS
- required.
- Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB): Must obtain a current MAB certification by the completion of orientation, and maintain current status throughout employment.
Knowledge and Experience:
The following combinations or knowledge and experience are required and/or desired:
- Minimum of 5 years' experience as a Peri-Operative, Medical-Surgical, Emergency, or critical care nurse or equivalent, within a general acute care hospital setting
- Additional experience as a nurse in an acute psychiatric setting, preferred.
- Three or more years previous experience working in a team healthcare environment, preferred.
- Experience working in a multi-specialty Pre-op/PACU/GI, preferably in an ambulatory surgery center, acceptable on a year-for-year substitution for general acute care hospital experience on a case-by-case review basis. This level of experience is typically achieved in approximately one to three years. Three years preferred.
- Interns or employees that have successfully completed a formal or continuing education training program focused on Pre-op/Peri-Op/PACU/GI will be considered and are eligible for substitution of one (1) year-for-year experience based on a case-by-case review of the program content.
Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge and interpersonal skills necessary to tactfully, kindly interact with diverse health professionals, physicians and patients/clients to include:
- Demonstrated knowledge of ASPAN Standards and infection control practices
- Must have a working knowledge of applicable regulations and standards.
- Current knowledge regarding equipment utilized in the PACU.
- Demonstrated skills in written and verbal communications, functional supervision/ delegation and human relations is required.
- Must be a flexible, creative individual who is open to change along with the ability to handle multiple priorities.
- Requires the ability to operate and trouble-shoot PACU equipment.
- Computer skills are required.
Physical Requirements :
While performing the duties of this job, this position is frequently required to do the following:
- Use standard office equipment and access, input, and retrieve information from a computer. Use computer keyboard with manual and finger dexterity and wrist-finger speed sufficient to perform repetitive actions efficiently for extended periods of time.
- Communicate effectively in person or via telephone in a manner which can be understood by those with whom the person is speaking, including a diverse population.
- Give and follow verbal and written instructions with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Perform complex mental functions and basic arithmetic functions; interpret complex laws, regulations, and policies; collect, interpret, and/or analyze complex data and information.
