Overview Position Overview The Labor and Delivery (L&D) Charge Nurse maintains comprehensive clinical oversight and administrative accountability for unit operations, patient care quality, and safety during their assigned shift. Operating in coordination with the Department Director, the Charge Nurse directly supervises and evaluates nursing personnel, oversees operational workflows, and optimizes resource allocation to uphold established clinical standards. The position delivers direct patient care within the licensed scope of practice as required, continually assessing care delivery to execute real-time plan-of-care modifications, while functioning as a clinical leader, mentor, and professional resource for unit personnel.

Responsibilities Key Responsibilities & Essential Duties Shift Leadership & Operations:

Directs and coordinates daily unit activities, staff assignments, and patient flow based on patient acuity, staff competency, and regulatory requirements.

Clinical Excellence & Patient Care:

Performs triage, updates goal-directed care plans, monitors hemodynamic/cardiac status, manages medication reconciliation, pain assessment/reassessment, and performs bedside/procedural time-outs.

Staff Supervision & Mentorship:

Mentors co-workers, assists with onboarding/orientation, handles conflict resolution, and participates in staff performance evaluations and scheduling.

Safety & Regulatory Compliance:

Ensures compliance with National Patient Safety Goals, Infection Control guidelines (OSHA/CDC), EMTALA regulations, safe patient handling, and crash cart protocols.

Communication & Collaboration:

Serves as a key liaison between staff, physicians, patients, and families, ensuring high standards of Service Excellence and positive interdepartmental relations.

Qualifications Qualifications & Requirements Licensure:

Current and valid state Registered Nurse (RN) license.

Certifications:

Current

BCLS, ACLS, NRP

(must be AHA), and Fetal Monitoring certificates required. Birth/Beyond certification within 6 months of hire.

Education:

BSN (Bachelor's Degree in Nursing) preferred.

Experience:

Previous nursing leadership or supervisory experience preferred; basic dysrhythmia training preferred.

Competencies:

Clinical proficiency across age-specific categories (Neonate/Infant, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric), working knowledge of labor laws, HR policies, and continuous quality improvement processes. Excellent oral and written communication.
