Position Summary:

A Registered Nurse with 24 hour accountability for managing one or more defined areas. Provides overall supervision of Registered Nurses and other healthcare providers who deliver nursing

care within areas of responsibility. Responsible for recruitment and retention, performance review, and professional development; involved in the budget formulation process and quality outcomes; and helps to plan for, organize, and lead the delivery of nursing care for a designated patient care area. A leader that communicates organizational vision and values and asks for the involvement of the work group to achieve target performance in quality, safety, service, efficiency and effectiveness.

Engages staff and other team members in a Shared Governance Framework that identifies and addresses issues, solves problems, and evaluates outcomes

a. Participates on unit and hospital Shared Governance Councils to address issues and facilitate information exchange.

b. Educates and supports staff on principles of Shared Governance.

c. Provides an environment conductive to opinion sharing and involves staff in decision making that is patient centered.

d. Tracks outcomes and celebrates achievements of Shared Governance Councils.

e. Builds credibility and collaborates with medical staff leaders in determining patient care needs, services, policies, and procedures.

Efficiency and Effectiveness

Ability to manage expenses to established budget and staffing plan

a. Prepares annual operating and capital expense needs.

b. Demonstrates fundamental business expertise.

c. Reviews expense variances and develops an appropriate plan to meet the budget.

d. Educates the patient care team members on financial implications of patient care decisions.

e. Responsible for staffing and scheduling personnel utilizing self

a. Follows Human Resource procedures related to selection and hiring of new employees.

d. Creates an environment conducive to professional growth and development.

e. Assures appropriate maintenance of employee files.

f. Monitors staff satisfaction through NDNQI staff nurse satisfaction and employee satisfaction surveys.

f. Identifies key issues related to satisfaction and retention and develops an action plan based on input from staff.

i. Executes and evaluates effectiveness of the plan.

j. Provides mentorship and career counseling to aspiring clinicians and leaders so they may develop required skill sets to achieve succession planning.

Articulates and supports the quality/performance improvement programs and goals

a. Determines patient care quality/performance improvement goals and objectives.

b. Defines and utilizes metrics to measure goal attainment.

c. Measures successes of improvement and analyzes root cause or variation from quality standards.

Maintains knowledge of current nursing practice and roles and functions of patient care team members to include care delivery systems and innovations

a. Articulates and ensures compliance with standards and regulations such as The Joint Commission, CMS, Tennessee State Nurse Practice Act, Tennessee State Board of Nursing Licensure Process, and policies and procedures of the hospital and assigned areas.

b. Ensures that policies and procedures are reviewed and updated in accordance with evidence based practice.

c. Role models lifelong learning to others.

d. Serves as a change agent when patient care delivery processes or work-flow redesign is developed and implemented.

e. Utilizes evidence based practice findings in the establishment of standards, practices, and patient care models with the interdisciplinary team.
