Hale's Orientation and Mobility is seeking a Full Time Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) to provide individualized orientation and mobility services to individuals who are blind or visually impaired. This role offers the opportunity to apply your expertise in meaningful, community-based settings while helping clients develop the skills needed to travel safely, confidently, and independently. Job Duties Provide individualized orientation and mobility instruction to individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Assess each client's orientation and mobility skills, needs, and goals. Develop individualized training based on each client's abilities, environment, and goals. Teach safe and effective travel techniques. Provide instruction in human guide techniques, protective techniques, cane skills, indoor and outdoor travel, street crossings, public transportation, route planning, and community travel. Help clients develop environmental awareness, problem-solving skills, and confidence while traveling. Provide instruction in clients' homes, workplaces, schools, community settings, and other appropriate environments. Monitor client progress and adjust instruction when needed. Complete accurate session notes, assessments, reports, and other required documentation on time. Communicate professionally with clients, families, and Hale's Orientation and Mobility team members. Maintain client safety and follow professional standards during all services. Required Qualifications Must hold a current Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) certification through ACVREP . Must meet the education and professional qualifications required to maintain COMS certification. ) . Must successfully pass all required background checks. Must have reliable transportation and be willing to travel to client and community locations as required. Physical Requirements & Work Environment The teammate is regularly required to walk, stand, sit, reach, talk, hear, and move throughout various environments while performing job duties. Must be able to walk and stand for extended periods while providing orientation and mobility instruction. Must be able to accompany clients while traveling through indoor and outdoor environments, including homes, workplaces, businesses, sidewalks, street crossings, public transportation areas, and other community settings. Work may take place on a variety of surfaces and terrain, including sidewalks, curbs, stairs, ramps, parking areas, and uneven surfaces. Must be able to perform job duties in varying outdoor weather conditions and temperatures, as appropriate for safe instruction. Must be able to observe the surrounding environment and respond appropriately to conditions that may affect client safety during instruction. Must be able to travel within the community and transition between multiple client or training locations as required.
