Full Job Description Job Summary:

The Vision Impairment (VI) Specialist provides direct instructional services and specialized support to students with visual impairments, including blindness and low vision, in educational settings. The VI Specialist collaborates with educational teams to ensure students have equitable access to curriculum, instructional materials, and educational environments through specialized instruction in Braille literacy, abacus skills, assistive technology, and compensatory access skills. The ideal candidate possesses extensive experience in Braille instruction, curriculum adaptation and translation, and abacus instruction, along with a strong understanding of educational programming for students with visual impairments.

Responsibilities:

Direct Student Instruction Provide individualized and small-group instruction to students with visual impairments in accordance with IEP goals and objectives. Deliver systematic instruction in Braille reading and writing, including contracted and uncontracted Braille. Provide instruction in the use of the abacus for mathematical computation and problem-solving. Teach compensatory skills, sensory efficiency skills, and independent learning strategies. Support students in accessing grade-level curriculum through specialized instructional methods. Braille and Curriculum Adaptation Translate educational materials into Braille using appropriate transcription standards. Adapt and modify classroom materials, assessments, and instructional resources to ensure accessibility. Coordinate timely production and delivery of Braille and tactile learning materials. Develop tactile graphics and accessible educational resources as needed. Consultation and Collaboration Collaborate with general education teachers, special education staff, related service providers, and administrators regarding student needs and accommodations. Provide recommendations for instructional strategies, environmental modifications, and assistive technology. Participate in IEP meetings and contribute to assessment, goal development, progress reporting, and service recommendations. Support families by providing information and resources related to visual impairment services and educational programming. Assessment and Documentation Conduct ongoing assessments of student progress and educational needs. Maintain accurate service logs, progress monitoring data, and required documentation. Prepare timely progress reports aligned with IEP goals and objectives. Assist in evaluating student access needs and recommending appropriate accommodations and supports.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Special Education, Visual Impairment Education, or a related field. Valid credential, certification, or authorization to serve students with visual impairments as required by state regulations. Experience providing direct educational services to students with visual impairments in school settings.

Demonstrated expertise in:

Braille instruction and literacy development Braille transcription and curriculum translation Abacus instruction Accessible educational materials development Assistive technology for students with visual impairments Knowledge of

processes, and special education best practices. Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Preferred Qualifications Master's degree in Visual Impairment, Special Education, or related field. Certification as a Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments (TVI). Experience supporting students across elementary, middle, and high school settings. Experience creating tactile graphics and adapting curriculum materials. Familiarity with Nemeth Code and Unified English Braille (UEB). Physical Requirements Ability to travel to assigned school sites. Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and lift instructional materials and equipment as needed. Ability to work directly with students in classroom and educational environments.
