POSITION SUMMARY
Recreational therapists plan, direct, and coordinate recreation-based treatment programs for people with disabilities, injuries, or illnesses. Recreational therapists use a variety of modalities, including arts and crafts, drama, music, and dance, sports, games, and community reintegration field trips to help maintain or improve a patient's physical, social, and emotional well-being.
POSITION EDUCATION/ QUALIFICATIONS
: Graduate from an Accredited School for Recreational/Physical Therapy Certified by the Texas Board of Recreational Therapy Licensure (TX BRTL), preferred Meet education and supervised clinical experience Preferred experience in Rehabilitation Setting CPR certification is required. Organizational skills is necessary Good written and verbal communication skills required. Ability to read, write and speak English Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with all levels of nursing, administration, and physicians
JOB KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE
: Preferred Two (2) years' experience or more in the Rehabilitation setting preferred. Preferred experience in adaptive sports program (wheelchair sports). Requires strong communication and organizational skills. Experience in program planning and management. Requires reasoning ability, critical thinking skills, and good independent judgment. Must present a professional image. Requires working with frequent interruptions. Prefer hospital experience
Responsibilities:
POSITION RESPONSIBILITES
Create treatment plans and programs that meet patients' needs and interests Assess patients' needs through observations, medical records, tests, and talking with other healthcare professionals, patients' families, and patients Plan and implement interventions to prevent harm to a patient Engage patients in therapeutic activities, such as games and field trips Help patients learn social skills needed to become or remain independent Teach patients about ways to cope with anxiety or depression Record and analyze a patient's progress Evaluate interventions for effectiveness Supervises and develops support staff of the recreational therapy department (i.e. Activity Coordinators) Designs and implements music therapy sessions based on patient/family needs using techniques including multimodal stimulation protocol, receptive music listening, passive music play to promote calming and comfort, developmental play through music tasks, and music and movement experiences. Actively participates in clinical design, implementation, and evaluation of the recreational department. Understands performance improvement methodology and achieves measurable outcomes. Monitors patient progress and provides documentation related to objectives and goal achievement. Seeks information about diversity and is culturally sensitive to the diversity of families in developing supportive programs and providing services. Participates in interdisciplinary treatment planning and co-treatment when appropriate. Provides educational programs for families, students, staff, and volunteers. Identifies areas for volunteer involvement and collaborates in the development of programs integrating participation of volunteers. Serves as a liaison for staff and volunteers in the implementation of Recreational intervention activities in the Rehab. Communicates with families, staff, and volunteers by providing notification of activities and events through appropriate correspondence. Advocates the mission of the hospital and represents the hospital professionally to volunteers, staff, patients, families and the community. Participates in professional organizations and continuing education initiatives to advance knowledge and skills for self and others. Maintains professional contacts with Recreational Therapy Professionals and serves as a resource for Rehab Recreational Therapy Department. Promotes the facility mission, vision and values by effectively communicating them to others. Considers mission, vision and values in developing services, standards and practice Consults with patient's physician regarding referrals for other services as needed. Participates in clinical rounding and provides/seeks input to/from others on patient care. Function as a resource for and provide team members with in-service/cross-training on physical therapy knowledge and skill areas. Attends and participates in community education/promotional activities as requested. Maintain competency, licenses/ certifications, and memberships in applicable professional organizations. The competency/skills assessment is satisfactorily completed annually. Other duties as assigned per Therapy Director.

Working Conditions :
The individual spends over 95% of his/her time in an air-conditioned environment with varying exposures to noise. There is protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. The position does have low exposure to malodorous, infectious body fluids from patients and some minimal exposure to noxious smells from cleansing agents. C.
Occupational Exposure:
This position has minimal to no exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues and is an OSHA Category III (although situations can be imagined or hypothesized under which anyone, anywhere, might encounter potential exposure to body fluids). Person who performs these duties are not called upon as part of their employment to perform or assist in emergency medical care or first aid or to be potentially exposed in some other way. D.
