About the
Role:
The Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) plays a vital role in supporting occupational therapists to help patients develop, recover, and improve the skills needed for daily living and working. This position involves implementing treatment plans designed by occupational therapists, monitoring patient progress, and adapting interventions to meet individual needs. The COTA works closely with patients of all ages who may be recovering from injuries, managing chronic conditions, or facing developmental challenges. By providing hands-on therapy and education, the COTA helps enhance patients' independence and quality of life. This role requires compassionate communication, meticulous documentation, and collaboration with a multidisciplinary healthcare team to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
Minimum Qualifications:
Associate degree from an accredited occupational therapy assistant program. Current certification as a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) through the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). Valid state licensure or registration as required by the state of employment. Basic life support (BLS) certification. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients and healthcare team members.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working in diverse healthcare settings such as hospitals, rehabilitation centers, or schools. Additional certifications in specialized therapy techniques or populations (e.g., pediatrics, geriatrics, neurological rehabilitation). Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) and therapy documentation software. Continuing education in emerging occupational therapy practices and patient care methodologies. Bilingual abilities to support communication with a diverse patient population.
Responsibilities:
Assist occupational therapists in delivering therapeutic interventions to patients based on individualized treatment plans. Conduct therapeutic activities and exercises to improve patients' motor skills, cognitive abilities, and daily living functions. Monitor and document patient progress, reporting any changes or concerns to the supervising occupational therapist. Educate patients and their families on therapy techniques and strategies to support recovery and independence at home. Maintain a safe and supportive environment for patients during therapy sessions, ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations and standards.
Skills:
The required skills enable the COTA to effectively implement therapeutic interventions and communicate clearly with patients and the healthcare team, ensuring treatment plans are followed accurately. Strong observational and documentation skills are essential for tracking patient progress and adjusting care as needed. Preferred skills such as experience in various healthcare environments and proficiency with electronic health records enhance the COTA's ability to adapt to different patient needs and streamline clinical workflows. Bilingual communication skills and specialized certifications allow the COTA to provide culturally competent care and address specific patient populations more effectively. Overall, these skills contribute to delivering high-quality, patient-centered occupational therapy services that promote recovery and independence. Successful completion of a pre-employment background and reference check by an outside agency engaged by the company to conduct background checking, the results of which must meet our employment requirements. Depending on your assigned duties, work location, facility access, and applicable Florida requirements, you may also be required to complete an Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) Level 2 background screening is required you must maintain eligibility throughout your assignment.
