Job Description
Summary:
The Surgical Technologist with Ophthalmology experience assists surgical team members during operative procedures. Arranges and inventories sterile set-ups for surgery, passes items as needed to the operating team while assisting in preparing and moving patients, and in cleaning the operating room. This is considered a position that requires ophthalmologic experience. Essential Responsibilities will include the following, and other duties may be assigned.Operating Room Preparation Duties:
- Prepares surgical suite, supplies, and equipment to meet environmental safety and infection control standards for all personnel and patients.
- Ensures the integrity of sterile packaging by opening supplies aseptically while controlling environmental factors that could expose equipment.
- Regularly checks equipment and supplies for proper working order and ensures they are ready for each surgical procedure.
- Demonstrates techniques of disinfection and sterilization by adhering to center policies and procedures, ensuring a sterile field is maintained.
Patient Pre-Operative Duties:
- Performs responsibilities as a surgical scrub for preoperative care for patients by ensuring that care is individualized, meeting the needs of each patient and surgeon.
- Assists with surgical procedures by anticipating the needs of surgeons and passing instruments; Prepares specimens for laboratory analysis.
- Identifies, corrects, and reports aseptic technique breaks to the appropriate personnel.
- Assists the registered nurse with patient preparation, transfers, and in counting procedures per established policy.
Safety and Infection Control Duties:
- Adheres to established company and ASC safety requirements and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
- Strictly adheres to aseptic techniques using a variety of supplies and instruments while actively monitoring the environment to ensure a sterile technique is maintained throughout procedures. Anticipates breaks in sterile technique and acts according to policy.
- Adheres to established surgery center safety requirements and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
- Actively participates in the time-out process and identifies potentially unsafe conditions and notifies the appropriate personnel.
- Successfully demonstrates competent usage of proper body mechanics in all activities.
- Completes employee and patient incident documentation timely while identifying potentially unsafe conditions.
- Demonstrates a complete understanding of established emergency procedures and provides appropriate support.
- Participates in quality and safety activities, as required.
Other Duties:
- Participates as a member of the team to promote a positive working environment and provide back-up support when necessary.
- Provides new employee orientations, training courses, and guides team members.
- Maintains, reviews, and orders additional inventory based on procedures scheduled and stock on hand.
- Assists with room turnover, cleanup, patient transporting, and positioning.
- Makes suggestions to management for policy and procedure enhancements by conducting research, reviewing results, and presenting recommendations in a clear message.
