Ophthalmic Technician Job Summary:

An Ophthalmic Technician assists ophthalmologists by performing clinical duties to ensure efficient and high-quality eye care. Responsibilities include conducting diagnostic tests, collecting patient histories, preparing patients for examination, and assisting with minor procedures. The technician plays a vital role in patient care and clinic flow.

Key Responsibilities:

Take detailed patient histories, including vision problems, medical conditions, medications, and allergies Measure and record visual acuity (with and without glasses or contact lenses) Perform diagnostic tests such as: Tonometry (intraocular pressure measurement) Visual field testing Fundus photography Optical coherence tomography (OCT) A-scan and B-scan ultrasonography Administer eye drops as directed by the ophthalmologist Assist during minor in-office procedures (e.g., injections, laser treatments) Maintain and sterilize instruments and examination rooms Manage patient flow and support daily clinic operations Document exam findings and test results in the electronic health record (EHR) Educate patients on treatment plans, medication usage, and follow-up instructions

Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent required Two years of experience required Certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) or Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) preferred Previous experience in an ophthalmology or optometry clinic preferred Strong understanding of ocular anatomy, diseases, and terminology Proficiency in using diagnostic equipment and EHR systems Excellent communication and patient service skills Attention to detail and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment

Work Environment:

Outpatient clinical setting May require standing or walking for extended periods May require travel between multiple locations Occasional evening or weekend shifts, depending on clinic hours
