Led by Dr. Matthew Howie and Dr. Tyler Fulton whom are committed to delivering thorough eye health evaluations in a state-of-the-art clinic. Our team provides comprehensive care for patients of all ages — from pediatric vision and contact lens management to the diagnosis and treatment of conditions like macular degeneration, glaucoma, dry eye, and cataracts. Our advanced diagnostics, unique eyewear gallery, and small-town service make us the premier eye care provider in the Des Moines metro. We are recruiting for an individual who will partner with our professional team of opticians, technicians, and doctors to give each patient the best possible experience in patient care and service. The Optometric Technician role is a rewarding, patient-facing position that positively impacts the daily lives of patients through the delivery of thorough, compassionate eye care. Position Overview The Optometric Technician contributes to a positive patient experience by ensuring the process of care — from greeting to retention — consistently exceeds patient expectations. This role works closely with our doctors to conduct clinical pretesting, document patient histories, coordinate medical scheduling, and support the front desk and optical team as needed. You will be the vital bridge between patients and our physicians, setting the tone for every visit with professionalism, efficiency, and empathy.

Review each patient's health, optical, and miscellaneous history as documented in notes, alerts, and prior charts — arriving intimately familiar with each workup before the patient is seen. Greet patients with a welcoming tone and conduct workups with professionalism, efficiency, and empathy. Perform and properly document autorefraction/topography, Screening Visual Field, Full Threshold Perimetry testing, Wide Field retinal imaging, tonometry, color, stereo, and OCT testing. Discuss and document medical, ocular, family, medication, and optical histories to thoroughly brief the doctor upon patient handoff. Medical Scheduling & Coordination Handle medical appointment inquiries and ensure appropriate scheduling. Send primary care reports as requested and coordinate ophthalmology referrals with the appropriate documentation. Send and chart prescription medications as requested by the prescribing doctor. Pull up patient medical insurance and managed care plans and explain coverages upon patient request. Patient Communication & Office Support Communicate with new patients about obtaining registration forms. Assist with contact lens insertion & removal (I&R) classes and optical dispensing as needed. Culture & Service Excellence standards Contribute to a positive patient experience from greeting to retention, consistently exceeding expectations. Close every patient encounter by asking, "Is there anything else I can do for you?" What We're Looking For Excellent customer service and interpersonal communication skills Strong attention to detail with the ability to multitask in a busy clinical environment Team player who can give and receive constructive feedback professionally Positive, patient-service-focused attitude and self-motivated work ethic Proficiency with computers and electronic health record systems Ability to operate all functions of the role in a professional, HIPAA-compliant manner Medical office, optometric, or clinical experience preferred — but we are willing to train the right individual!
