The Lead Technician serves as the clinical expert and "go-to" resource for the technician team while working alongside physicians and the Clinic Manager to maintain exceptional patient care, efficient clinic flow, staff development, and a positive team environment. The ideal candidate is confident working independently, enjoys mentoring others, leads by example, and is committed to delivering an outstanding patient experience. Retina experience, surgical coordination experience, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment are essential. Experience with clinical trials is a plus. Education & Experience High school diploma or equivalent required. Minimum of 3 years of ophthalmic technician experience (retina experience strongly preferred). Previous experience mentoring, training, or leading other technicians preferred. COA, COT, or COMT certification is preferred but not required. Experience with electronic medical records (eClinicalWorks preferred). Clinical Responsibilities Independently perform comprehensive ophthalmic workups. Obtain patient histories including chief complaint, HPI, ocular/medical history, medications, allergies, and family history. Perform visual acuity testing, pupillary assessment, confrontation fields, and anterior chamber assessment. Measure intraocular pressure using Tonopen and Goldmann applanation. Perform OCT imaging, fundus photography, and fluorescein angiography. Scribe physician examinations accurately and efficiently. Assist physicians during injections, laser procedures, and minor office procedures. Prepare and coordinate surgical cases. Provide patient education regarding treatments, injections, testing, and postoperative care. Anticipate physician needs to improve efficiency throughout the clinic. Assist with medication refills under physician direction. Maintain exam rooms, equipment, and supplies. Coordinate inventory and ordering of clinic supplies and injectable medications. Perform equipment maintenance, calibration, cleaning, and sterilization of instruments. Cross-train and assist other departments as needed to maintain excellent patient care. Lead Technician Responsibilities Coordinate daily technician assignments and help ensure appropriate clinical coverage. Monitor and maintain efficient patient flow throughout the clinic. Serve as the primary clinical resource for technicians by answering questions and providing guidance. Train, mentor, and support new and existing technicians while tracking clinical competencies. Assist with onboarding and continued staff development. Help identify workflow improvements that increase efficiency and patient satisfaction. Coordinate equipment maintenance and ensure diagnostic equipment is functioning properly. Assist with inventory oversight for medications and clinical supplies. Promote adherence to practice policies, clinical protocols, and quality standards. Troubleshoot workflow issues and communicate solutions with physicians and the Clinic Manager. Serve as a liaison between technicians, physicians, and management. Foster teamwork, accountability, professionalism, and a positive work environment. Lead by example through excellent attendance, communication, and patient care. Qualifications The ideal candidate will demonstrate: Advanced ophthalmic technician skills with minimal supervision.
