Job Description

Ophthalmic Technician Position Summary Performs routine, preliminary eye function testing to assist Ophthalmologist in diagnosing eye disorders and diseases. Gathers patient information, assists Ophthalmologist in educating patients about medication and procedures, and performs instrument maintenance. Assists Ophthalmologist with surgical cases and laser procedures. Minimum Qualifications Work Experience Previous Ophthalmic Technician experience required. Education Completion of medical assistant training program (or another training program or degree that exceeds the requirements of a medical assistant program) OR equivalent on the job training working under the direction of a physician is required. Certifications/Licensure Certified Ophthalmic Technician by the American Academy of Ophthalmology preferred. Job Specific Performance Standards The duties listed below are a summary of the major essential functions of this position. The position may require other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned, and specific functions may change from time to time. Performs tests and measures eye function to assist Ophthalmologist in diagnosing and treating eye disorders and diseases. Assists provider by triaging patients, completing history taking, and documenting patient information. Prepares for examinations and assists with special procedures. Assists Ophthalmologist with surgical cases and laser procedures. Participates in patient education by providing literature or training regarding medications, use of supplies, etc. Insures cleanliness and preparedness of exam rooms before each use in accordance with infection control principles. Demonstrates knowledge and proper use of equipment necessary to perform job duties.
