We are seeking a skilled and patient-focused Ophthalmic Technician to join our growing clinical team. This position plays a critical role in supporting efficient patient flow, assisting physicians with high-quality care, and ensuring an exceptional patient experience. For the Champlain Ophthalmology division, the practice requires at least two experienced Ophthalmic Technicians with demonstrated proficiency in performing manual refractions. Position Summary The Ophthalmic Technician assists ophthalmologists in providing quality eye care to patients through diagnostic testing, patient education, clinical support, and documentation. This role involves performing ophthalmic testing, preparing patients for examination, assisting physicians with procedures, and maintaining accurate medical records within the electronic health record system. Responsibilities Patient Care Obtain and document accurate patient medical histories, including chief complaints, medications, allergies, and family history Prepare patients for examinations by explaining procedures and ensuring patient comfort Assist patients with mobility and positioning as needed Educate patients regarding basic eye care and pre- and post-operative instructions as directed by the physician Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations Clinical Procedures and Diagnostic Testing Perform a variety of ophthalmic tests and measurements, including: Visual acuity testing (distance and near) Manual and auto-refraction (required competency for designated technician roles) Intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement / tonometry Corneal topography Pachymetry Visual field testing Fundus photography Optical coherence tomography (OCT) Color vision testing Basic motility and pupillary assessment Assist physicians with slit lamp examinations and minor in-office procedures Additional responsibilities include: Properly operate, clean, and maintain ophthalmic equipment Prepare and administer topical medications as directed Maintain accurate and detailed patient records within the EHR system Support efficient patient flow throughout the clinic Administrative and Clinical Support Prepare and stock examination rooms Maintain a clean, organized, and compliant clinical environment Sterilize instruments and equipment as appropriate Assist with patient phone calls and inquiries as needed Monitor and maintain inventory of ophthalmic supplies Perform additional duties as assigned by physicians or practice leadership Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required Completion of an accredited ophthalmic technician program preferred COA, COT, or COMT certification preferred Prior ophthalmic technician experience required Experience performing manual refractions strongly preferred and required for designated Champlain Ophthalmology technician positions Skills and Abilities Strong understanding of ophthalmic terminology and clinical procedures Proficiency in ophthalmic diagnostic testing and refractions Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Strong attention to detail and organizational abilities Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced clinical environment Experience working within electronic health record systems Professional, patient-centered demeanor Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times Physical Requirements Ability to stand and walk for extended periods Ability to bend, stoop, and reach as needed Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds Visual acuity and manual dexterity sufficient to perform ophthalmic testing and procedures Work Environment Fast-paced ophthalmology clinical setting Frequent interaction with patients, physicians, and clinical staff Exposure to ophthalmic diagnostic equipment and patient care environments
