Ophthalmic Assistant/Optician 3001 West Andrew Johnson Highway, Morristown, TN 37814 Full-time Full-time Job Summary We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Ophthalmic Assistant/Optician to join our healthcare team. The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in ophthalmology, patient care, and optical services, with a commitment to delivering exceptional service in a clinical setting. In this role, you will support ophthalmologists and optometrists by performing patient intake, assisting with examinations, and managing optical needs. Your expertise will contribute to providing comprehensive eye care while ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations and maintaining a welcoming environment for patients. Responsibilities Conduct patient intake by gathering medical history, verifying insurance information, and updating medical records accurately within electronic health record (EHR) systems such as EyeMD or other EMR platforms. Measure vital signs and perform basic ophthalmic assessments to assist clinicians in diagnosing eye conditions. Prepare examination rooms using aseptic techniques to ensure a sterile environment for patient procedures. Assist ophthalmologists and optometrists during eye examinations by handing instruments and providing support throughout the process. Fit and dispense eyewear, including selecting frames, taking measurements, and adjusting lenses to meet individual patient prescriptions. Manage optical inventory, including ordering supplies, maintaining stock levels, and performing retail sales of eyewear products. Educate patients on eye health, proper contact lens care, and available optical products while promoting retail sales opportunities. Maintain compliance with HIPAA regulations by safeguarding patient confidentiality and handling medical records securely. Support front desk operations by scheduling appointments, answering patient inquiries, and managing billing processes related to medical coding and billing procedures. Skills Strong knowledge of patient care practices within ophthalmology clinics and medical office environments. Familiarity with HIPAA regulations to ensure confidentiality of protected health information (PHI). Proficiency in intake procedures, vital signs measurement, and basic ophthalmic assessments. Expertise in aseptic technique to maintain sterile environments during examinations and procedures. Experience with optical services including frame fitting, lens measurements, and adjustments; familiarity with retail math for sales transactions. Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy of the eye, physiology related to vision health, and common ophthalmic conditions. Ability to operate EMR systems such as Epic or similar platforms efficiently for documentation and scheduling purposes. Background in medical records management, medical coding, billing processes, and familiarity with clinic workflows. Retail sales skills combined with excellent customer service abilities to enhance patient experience and promote optical products. Previous clinic experience in pediatrics or general ophthalmology is advantageous for supporting diverse patient needs.
