Optical Office Assistant / Contact Lens Specialist Position Overview We are seeking an experienced and motivated Optical Office Assistant / Contact Lens Specialist to join our ophthalmology practice. The ideal candidate has strong knowledge of contact lenses and optical products , excellent customer service skills, and the ability to confidently assist patients with their contact lens and eyewear needs. This position requires someone who is organized, reliable, detail-oriented, and comfortable with both patient care and sales . The right candidate should be able to work independently while also being a strong team player. Key ResponsibilitiesContact Lens Responsibilities Assist patients with contact lens selections based on their prescriptions and individual needs. Have a strong understanding of different contact lens types, brands, materials, and replacement schedules. Assist with contact lens fittings, trials, insertion/removal instruction, and follow-up. Order contact lenses and maintain accurate records of patient orders. Communicate with contact lens manufacturers and vendors as needed. Optical & Sales Responsibilities Assist patients in selecting eyeglasses, frames, lenses, and contact lenses. Confidently discuss and recommend products based on the patient's prescription, lifestyle, and needs. Present different lens options, coatings, upgrades, and contact lens choices. Process optical and contact lens orders accurately. Follow up with patients regarding orders, pickups, and outstanding items. Provide excellent customer service throughout the patient's optical experience. Meet practice sales goals while maintaining a professional, patient-focused approach. Insurance & Office Responsibilities Verify and pull vision insurance benefits accurately. Understand vision insurance allowances, contact lens benefits, frame allowances, lens benefits, copays, and eligibility. Explain insurance benefits and patient out-of-pocket costs clearly. Accurately document insurance benefits and patient information in the practice management/EHR system. Collect payments and accurately process transactions. Maintain organized patient and optical records. Communicate professionally with patients, doctors, technicians, and other staff members.
Qualifications Required:
Previous experience working with contact lenses . Strong knowledge of contact lens products, brands, and fitting processes. Experience verifying and pulling vision insurance benefits . Previous experience selling contact lenses and/or optical products . Strong customer service and communication skills. Ability to confidently explain products, benefits, pricing, and patient responsibility. Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills. Ability to multitask in a busy ophthalmology/optical office. Reliable, punctual, and professional. Comfortable working as part of a team.
Preferred:
Previous experience in an ophthalmology, optometry, or optical practice. Experience with optical sales and frame/lens recommendations. Experience with EHR/practice management systems. Knowledge of major vision insurance plans. Ideal Candidate We are looking for someone who is experienced, dependable, personable, and sales-minded . The ideal candidate is comfortable speaking with patients, understands contact lenses and optical products, and can confidently recommend products without being overly pushy. This person should take pride in providing an excellent patient experience while helping the practice maintain efficient office operations and strong optical/contact lens sales.
