Roles & Responsibilities Patient Care & Consultation Conduct thorough patient consultations to assess visual needs, lifestyle, and preferences Interpret and verify prescriptions from licensed optometrists and ophthalmologists Recommend appropriate lens types, coatings, and frame styles tailored to individual patient needs Educate patients on lens options, including single vision, progressive, bifocal, anti-reflective, and photochromic lenses Assist patients with frame selection, ensuring proper fit, comfort, and aesthetic appeal Fitting & Dispensing Accurately measure and record patients' pupillary distance, segment heights, and other fitting parameters Fit and adjust eyeglasses and contact lenses to ensure proper alignment and comfort Perform frame adjustments, repairs, and modifications using industry-standard tools Verify finished eyewear against prescriptions using lensometers and other optical equipment Dispense and fit contact lenses and provide instruction on proper care and usage Technical & Equipment Operations Operate optical instruments including lensometers, pupilometers, and auto-refractors Maintain and perform routine quality checks on optical equipment Stay current on advancements in optical technology, lens materials, and industry trends Administrative & Operational Support Process and track eyewear orders with optical labs and vendors, ensuring accuracy and timely delivery Maintain accurate and complete patient records in the practice management system Handle insurance verification and facilitate billing for optical services and products Manage inventory of frames, lenses, and optical accessories; assist with restocking as needed Schedule and manage patient appointments, including confirmations, reminders, and follow-ups Quality & Patient Experience Uphold a high standard of patient satisfaction through courteous, professional service Address and resolve patient concerns related to eyewear fit, comfort, or performance Participate in quality control processes to ensure all dispensed products meet standards Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming optical dispensary environment Qualifications Required ABO (American Board of Opticianry) certification required & Licensed in the State of Virginia; NCLE certification a plus Minimum of 5 years of experience as a licensed or certified optician Proficiency with optical dispensing equipment and fitting techniques Strong knowledge of lens types, frame materials, coatings, and ophthalmic terminology Experience with optical practice management software Excellent communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills High level of attention to detail and accuracy Preferred Experience with specialty lenses (e.g., scleral, orthokeratology, multifocal contact lenses) Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) systems
