POSITION SUMMARY
The Patient Care Orderly provides direct, hands-on support to patients before, during, and after outpatient surgical procedures at a physician-owned surgery practice specializing in gender affirming surgery. Working under the direction of the Director of Nursing, Registered Nurse and surgical team, this role prepares patients for procedures, assists with transfers and positioning, supports Preoperative, Intraoperative, recovery and discharge readiness, and helps maintain a clean, safe, and efficient perioperative environment. Because patients are often navigating a deeply personal and long-anticipated stage of their transition, this role requires genuine warmth, patience, and respect - including using each patient's correct name and pronouns, maintaining dignity during personal care, and providing steady, reassuring support before and after surgery. The position is accountable for accurate, timely patient support and documentation that allows the clinical team to maintain patient safety and procedure throughput. This role interacts directly with patients, families, surgeons, anesthesia providers, and nursing staff, and has no independent clinical decision-making authority.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Assists with patient transfers and transport between reception, preoperative, operating room, and postanesthesia recovery areas, using safe bodymechanics and transfer techniques and ensuring patient comfort and safety throughout. assists with postprocedure needs (repositioning, ambulation, personal care, light nourishment), and promptly reports any changes in patient condition to the RN. Supports room turnover and supply readiness by cleaning and resetting patient care areas between cases, restocking supplies, linens in the Perioperative area. assisting with equipment setup and breakdown per infectioncontrol standards. Maintains and organizes the Storage areas, Communicates and reports supplies that are low in stock immediately. Maintains regular and reliable attendance sufficient to meet the position's operational, patientservice, and team obligations, with or without reasonable accommodation. Complies with applicable laws, regulations, accreditation requirements, privacy and security standards (including HIPAA), Infection Control Prevention and organizational policies relevant to the position.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience:
1 year of direct patientcare experience
Licensure/Certification:
current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification, or ability to obtain BLS within 30 days of hire.
Knowledge/Skills:
Safe patient transfer, positioning, and ambulation technique; ability to accurately take and record vital signs; basic electronic health record documentation; clear verbal and written communication with patients, families, and clinical staff; ability to maintain confidentiality.
Other:
Successful completion of a background check and preemployment health screening (TB test, immunization records) consistent with facility infectioncontrol policy; ability to safely move or assist in moving patients with assistance and appropriate equipment as needed.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Prior experience in an ambulatory surgery center, hospital perioperative unit preferred. CNA preferred and/or 1 year of direct patientcare experience in Perioperative area as PCO Active California Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification
WORK SCHEDULE, LOCATION, AND TRAVEL
Schedule:
MondayFriday, typically 8:30 5:00 PM aligned with the daily surgical case schedule; occasional early arrival or late departure to support case volume. No routine weekend work or oncall requirement.
Location:
Onsite at the practice's outpatient surgery center in downtown San Francisco. Regular onsite presence is an essential function because direct, handson patient care cannot be performed remotely.
