Job Description

Job Purpose:
The Group Exercise Instructor at YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago is responsible for delivering high-quality group fitness classes that motivate and engage participants. The instructor will create a safe and welcoming environment while promoting health and wellness through effective exercise routines.
Key Responsibilities:
Plan and deliver group exercise classes that are suitable for participants of varying fitness levels. Ensure the safety and well-being of all class participants by providing clear instructions and modifications as needed. Maintain a clean and organized workout space, adhering to YMCA standards and guidelines. Foster a positive and inclusive atmosphere that encourages participation and supports the YMCA's mission of promoting healthy living. Stay updated on current fitness trends and incorporate new techniques into classes to enhance participant experience. Build relationships with members to encourage continued participation and membership retention. Collaborate with other YMCA staff to support community events and initiatives related to health and fitness. Attend regular training sessions and meetings to maintain certification and improve instructional skills.
Required Education:
High school diploma or equivalent. A degree in physical education, exercise science, or a related field is preferred.
Required Experience:
Experience in leading group exercise classes, preferably in a gym or community center setting. Proven track record of engaging and motivating participants of various fitness levels. Experience in developing and implementing fitness programs tailored to diverse groups.
Required Skills and Abilities:
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with class participants. Ability to demonstrate and instruct proper exercise techniques and safety protocols. Certification in group exercise instruction from a recognized organization (e.g., ACE, AFAA, or similar). Ability to adapt classes to meet the needs and abilities of participants. Strong organizational skills to manage class schedules and participant records. Passion for health and fitness, with a commitment to promoting a healthy lifestyle.
