Job Description

Classification Summary Under the supervision of the Aquatic & Recreation Manager or Social Services & Community Center Manager, the Fitness Instructor serves as a teacher and leader of fitness related classes including but not limited to water exercise, yoga, dance fitness, step classes, Pilates, and more. Fitness instructors may teach one or more types of fitness classes depending on the training and certifications they have. Fitness Instructors are responsible for developing lesson plans for the classes and leading participants through exercises as well as providing modifications for participants as needed. Distinguishing Characteristics The intent of this position description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbent(s) in this position. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties in this description and incumbent(s) may be required to perform position-related tasks other than those specifically listed in this description. Supporting the development and delivery of fitness programs, including but not limited to, water fitness classes, yoga classes, Zumba classes, step classes, and more. Promoting all facilities, programs, and services when in contact with the general public. Serve as a front-line contact for education and enforcement of City policies and codes in public facilities. Organizing and guiding a variety of fitness classes. Ensuring a safe learning environment for all participants. Choreographing and planning all classes. Communicating fitness goals with participants making sure the class meets their needs. Reporting all accidents, incidents, and disciplinary actions to supervisor. Overseeing proper use of facilities, equipment, and supplies. Attending all staff meetings and in-service training. Practicing continuous learning through individual study and training. Respecting diversity in the workplace. Flexible schedule required with ability to workdays, evenings and weekends as needed. Using independent, sound judgment to react quickly and appropriately in emergency situations. This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive. Minimum Qualifications Knowledge The position requires specialized knowledge of: Certified and trained in the format of the class being instructed and upholding the requirements of compliance for class. Principles and processes for providing customer services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction. Proper and safe leading of a fitness class. First Aid/CPR/First Aid, and emergency procedures. Communicating clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Resolving customer complaints and concerns. Skills and Abilities This position requires the ability to carry out, but is not limited to, the following functions: Proper cleaning, set up, and taken down of class equipment. Operate fitness area equipment and sound system. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities. Maintain mental capacity that allows the capability of effectively interacting and communicating with others. Implement departmental policies, procedures, and objectives. Monitor departmental health and safety policies and objectives. Maintain effective working relationships with superiors, co-workers, and the public. Education, Training, and Experience Must be 18 years of age or older to apply. Must pass criminal history background check Must be certified in the format being taught and uphold requirements of compliance for that format with one year of previous teaching experience. Must have experience working with all age groups. Other Requirements American Red Cross CPR/First Aid/AED certifications required. Other certifications and training may be required depending on the fitness class instructed. Bilingual preferred. Working conditions/Physical and Mental Demands Requires sufficient ambulatory ability to stand, walk and demonstrate activities for extended periods of time, lift and move medium weight materials up to 50 pounds, and move to various work locations. Must be able to spend most of your shift on your feet, demonstrate exercises, and help patrons with workouts. If teaching water fitness classes, must have basic swimming abilities. Requires sufficient arm, hand, finger dexterity to demonstrate physical activities and use a computer keyboard and other office equipment. Requires normal hearing and speaking skills to communicate with staff and customers in one-on-one and large group settings. Requires visual acuity to read printed materials and labels and to observe students perform exercises assigned. Indoor and outdoor recreational facilities, irregular work hours; may work in or around water and slippery surfaces. Periods of mobility with light and heavy physical activity.
