Production PharmacistJob Description The Production Pharmacist works under the direction of the Pharmacy Director and collaborates closely with Sterile and Non-Sterile Production Managers to oversee the preparation of compounded sterile and non-sterile medications. This role ensures strict compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as internal policies, while maintaining the highest standards of quality, accuracy, and patient safety. The Production Pharmacist also supports prescription dispensing operations, provides direct patient care and counseling, and contributes to continuous improvement in compounding practices. Responsibilities Monitor and ensure that all compounded sterile and non-sterile preparations are accurate and fully compliant with master formula worksheets. Verify that cleaning and garbing procedures are performed correctly and consistently in accordance with company policies. Perform pharmaceutical calculations accurately and complete all required documentation for compounded preparations. Operate all production equipment accurately and in accordance with established policies, procedures, and safety standards. Ensure the correct and appropriate use of aseptic techniques and thoroughly prepare work areas prior to production activities. Operate and monitor technical and computerized equipment to ensure that quality standards are consistently maintained. Ensure the quality, purity, and potency of all compounded medications produced in the pharmacy. Conduct quality control tests and inspections to verify the accuracy and integrity of compounded preparations. Stay informed about new compounding techniques, formulations, and technologies and incorporate best practices into daily work. Engage in continuous learning and professional development related to compounding pharmacy practices. Ensure proper technique, accurate preparation, accurate documentation, and full compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations for all pharmaceutical products dispensed. Adhere to all Standard Operating Procedures and company policies, including those outlined in the Employee Handbook. Support the maintenance of the pharmacy's licensure and accreditation related to compounding activities. Collaborate with healthcare professionals, including physicians and veterinarians, to develop appropriate compounded medications for human and animal patients. Work closely with pharmacy technicians and other staff members to efficiently and accurately fulfill prescriptions. Assist with the shipping and handling of prescription orders when needed to ensure timely delivery. Ensure that prescription orders are processed according to the requirements and requests of prescribers and patients. Provide patient care by assessing patient demographics, reviewing and maintaining medication histories, and reviewing patient medication profiles. Develop patient care plans by establishing desired outcomes, designing therapeutic care plans, identifying alternatives for achieving outcomes, and monitoring patient progress. Educate patients on their drug therapy and monitor treatment to evaluate the appropriateness of medication use, dosage form, regimen, route, therapeutic duplication, and potential drug interactions. Monitor ongoing drug therapy to ensure continued appropriateness of medication selection, dosage form, regimen, route of administration, and to identify any therapeutic duplication or interactions. Communicate effectively with patients, nurses, physicians, and co-workers to confirm that all prescription information is accurate and complete. Counsel patients on over-the-counter and prescription medications, as well as nutritional supplements, to promote safe and effective use. Support prior authorization processes and third-party billing activities as needed to facilitate patient access to medications. Essential Skills Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree. Active Pennsylvania (PA) pharmacist license. At least 1 year of experience in pharmacy practice with required experience in compounding (sterile or non-sterile). Hands-on experience preparing sterile and/or non-sterile compounded medications. Strong knowledge of pharmacy laws and regulations at the federal, state, and local levels. Demonstrated ability to perform accurate pharmaceutical calculations and maintain precise documentation. Proficiency with intermediate-level computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. Experience using The Compounder (PK software product) or similar compounding software. Ability to operate standard office equipment such as photocopiers, fax machines, and telephones. Knowledge of third-party billing processes. Ability to operate and monitor technical and computerized pharmacy equipment. Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality, purity, and potency of compounded medications. Effective communication skills for interacting with patients, prescribers, and internal staff. Ability to work collaboratively with pharmacy technicians and other healthcare professionals. Capability to provide patient counseling on prescription, over-the-counter medications, and nutritional supplements. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working in a PCAB, ACHC, or URAC accredited compounding environment is beneficial. Familiarity with QS-1 pharmacy software is preferred but not required. Understanding of HIPAA and OSHA requirements and their application in a pharmacy setting. Experience collaborating with veterinarians and preparing compounded medications for animals, including pets, horses, and zoo animals. Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and staying current with new compounding techniques and technologies. Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a high-compliance environment. Comfort with participating in prior authorization workflows and insurance-related processes. Work Environment The role is based in a specialized compounding pharmacy environment that focuses on creating custom medications for people and animals, including pets, horses, and zoo animals. The pharmacy operates under PCAB, ACHC, and URAC-accredited standards and maintains strict compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, and other regulatory requirements. The Production Pharmacist works closely with sterile and non-sterile production teams, using technical and computerized equipment, compounding software such as The Compounder (PK), and general office tools including photocopiers, fax machines, telephones, and standard computer applications like Microsoft Word and Excel. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Kennett Square, PA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $60.00 - $62.00/hr.
