POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under supervision of the Regional Long Term Care Ombudsman, receives, investigates and resolves complaints from or on behalf of residents of long term care facilities. Promotes public understanding of long-term care. Coordinates and collaborates with other agencies and organizations on long term care activities.REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
1. Receives, investigates and resolves complaints on behalf of residents of nursing homes, residential care facilities, and other facilities under the program's jurisdiction. 2. Maintains certification and proficiency by participating in required and related training. Stays current and performs duties in accordance with State ombudsman requirements. 3. Maintains records and completes required reports and documentation of case-related information; maintains confidentiality of client information. 4. Develops background materials, reports and other materials needed on advocacy issues. 5. Promotes public understanding of resident's rights and other long term care matters including development and distribution of materials, public speaking, training activities and use of exhibits. 6. Coordinates activities with agencies that regulate and license long term care facilities. 7. Provides training and consultation to families and residents' councils and to staff of long term care facilities. 8. Reviews and comments on laws, regulations and policies that impact on residents of long term care facilities. 9. Promotes community and volunteer support for residents of long term care facilities. 10. Performs other related duties as required. 11. Please be advised that confidentiality isMANDATORY

A. A Bachelor's degree, preferably in Social Services Field, Nursing, or a related field and per state guidelines. B. Two or more years' experience in human services or long term care preferred. C. Completion of the Ombudsman Certification training is mandatory. D. Must possess a valid S.C. Driver's LicenseSKILLS NECESSARY

Must be able to learn regulations that affect residents of long term care facilities. Requires good communications skills as well as conflict resolution skills; must be able to handle situations that may become adversarial. Must have the ability and judgment to evaluate cases, evidence and situations thoroughly and effectively. Must have or learn basic computer skills. Must have skill and ability to interact with employees, associates, government officials and the general public in an effective and professional manner. Must have ability to establish harmonious and effective working relationships. Must be discreet and diplomatic. Must have ability to maintain cordial and productive working relationships with people of varied social, cultural, and educational background.Guidelines and Supervision:
Supervision and guidance will be provided by the Regional Long Term Care Ombudsman Program Manager. In addition, technical assistance and guidance are available through the State LTC Ombudsman. Should there be conflicting guidance, the Regional Long Term Care Ombudsman Manager is to be consulted.
