Review, interpret, and verify prescriptions for accuracy, appropriateness, dosage, interactions, allergies, contraindications, and potential medication-related problems. Accurately dispense prescription medications in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and pharmacy policies. Perform final verification of prescriptions prepared by pharmacy technicians or other authorized pharmacy personnel. Counsel patients regarding medication use, dosage, administration, side effects, precautions, storage, adherence, and drug interactions. Contact prescribers when clarification or therapeutic intervention is necessary. Process and oversee prescription insurance claims, including prior authorizations, rejected claims, refill-too-soon issues, formulary alternatives, and coordination of benefits. Maintain appropriate records for prescription medications and controlled substances. Ensure compliance with DEA requirements and applicable federal and state controlled-substance regulations. Review controlled-substance prescriptions for validity and identify potential misuse, diversion, inappropriate prescribing, or other concerns requiring pharmacist intervention. Administer vaccines and other pharmacist-authorized clinical services when properly trained, certified, and permitted by law. Maintain appropriate vaccine documentation, storage, temperature monitoring, and reporting. Supervise pharmacy technicians, interns, trainees, and other support personnel as permitted by applicable law. Delegate pharmacy tasks appropriately and verify that delegated duties are completed accurately. Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and other privacy and security requirements. Assist with inventory management, medication ordering, receiving, returns, recalls, expired medications, and appropriate medication disposal. Monitor medication storage conditions, including refrigerator and freezer temperatures when applicable. Participate in inventory counts and controlled-substance reconciliation. Identify and report medication errors, dispensing incidents, adverse events, and other patient-safety concerns according to pharmacy policy. Maintain a clean, organized, professional, and secure pharmacy environment. Provide courteous and professional service to patients and resolve medication-related concerns appropriately. Answer telephone calls and communicate with prescribers, patients, insurance companies, and other healthcare professionals. Support prescription workflow to help ensure timely and accurate service. Perform opening and closing pharmacy responsibilities when assigned. Complete required continuing education, licenses, certifications, and compliance training. Perform other pharmacist duties within the individual's scope of practice as assigned.
