Job Description
A Brief Overview The Pharmacy Technician 2 is a support-level position that is accountable for assisting pharmacists in the retrieval, processing, preparation, and distribution of medications for patient administration. The Technician 2 functions in all foundational aspects of drug distribution that do not require the professional judgment of a pharmacist. All assigned activities are performed under the supervision of a Pharmacist. The Pharmacy Technician 2 is also responsible for performing all the functions of the Technician 1 when assigned. What You Will Do For Inpatient Pharmacy Tech 2, activities include but are not limited to:
- May prepare compounded sterile products in strict accordance with USP standards and aseptic technique protocols.
- Assists in the preparation and labeling of non-sterile compounded formulations following USP guidelines
- Ensures the accurate and timely delivery of patient-specific medications to nursing units, prioritizing STAT orders to ensure timely patient care.
- Restocks Automated Dispensing Cabinets (ADCs) and pharmacy technology systems, ensuring accurate counts and the removal of near-dated or expired medications.
- Monitors drug stock levels in assigned pharmacy areas and med rooms; performs routine cycle counts and identifies items requiring reorder to prevent stockouts.
- Assists with the orientation of new staff to specific tasks or workflows when assigned, focusing on demonstrating standard operating procedures.
- Maintains a clean and organized workspace, adhering to all hand hygiene and garbing requirements.
- Orients and trains new staff.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned. For Outpatient Pharmacy Tech 2, activities include but are not limited to:
- Utilizes pharmacy systems to process prescriptions, including insurance adjudication and prior authorization submittal, and accurately prepares dangerous drugs for dispensing including counting, pouring, labeling, and performing non-sterile drug compounding and reconstitution.
- Inventory, replenish, and maintain drug stock which includes automated dispensing cabinets and prescription pick-up kiosks.
- Packaging and selling dangerous drugs to a patient or patient representative and answering questions to ensure a positive patient experience. For Medication History Pharmacy Tech 2, activities include but are not limited to:
- Support medication history collection process for ED and inpatient units utilizing appropriate sources and communication.
- Communicate effectively with patients during the interview and accurately record the medication history.
- Maintain open communication with nurses, patient care technicians, practitioners, and other personnel in the hospital to report important findings.
