Summary:
Assist the pharmacist in providing all inpatient and outpatient Pharmacy services to patients of Doylestown Hospital. This includes preparation of medications, delivery to nursing units, providing clerical support and other duties related to the operation of the Pharmacy.
Responsibilities:
1. Coordinates, with the pharmacist, the workflow for the processing of medication orders.
  • Works under the direct supervision of the pharmacists.
  • Coordinates medication order retrieval and delivery by use of the pneumatic tube system.
  • Coordinates orders labeled "stat" or "now" for immediate processing by a pharmacist.
  • Maintains the sequence of physician orders received in the Pharmacy.
  • Utilizes the ADT information generated by the Hospital's Information System for patient location and patient drawer maintenance.
  • Prepackages medications as required using the appropriate software and record keeping.
  • Answers telephones, fax requests and responds to the front window as required.
2. Accurately prepares the routine supply of oral and injectable medications according to departmental policies and procedures. . Pulls and delivers medications correctly for Automated Dispensing cabinets and the Night Cabinet on a routine schedule and as needed. . Follows department policy and procedure for controlled substance delivery. . Accurately prepares and delivers patient cassettes and IV Medications to each patient care area. . Runs the Automated Packaging Machine for repacked medications and cart fill. . Uses Medidose software for extemporaneous packaging. 3. Delivers and returns medications to and from patient care areas and other departments on a scheduled basis and when needed.
  • Observes Policy and Procedures for medications that can and cannot be sent through the tube system.
  • Follows departmental procedures for deliveries.
  • Retrieves unused or discontinued medications from patient care areas and returns them to the pharmacy.
  • Acts as Pharmacy liaison to Patient Care Areas. 4. Maintains stock appropriately in the pharmacy, and in the patient care areas.
  • Maintains refrigerator temperature logs and research medication stock temperature logs.
  • Maintains proper stock levels of medications and supplies in the pharmacy.
  • Utilizes the proper reordering procedures to notify the pharmacy buyer or administrative assistant of needed medications or supplies.
  • Performs monthly unit inspections for assigned areas and monitors expiration dates. 5. Uses technology and automation appropriately to support medication delivery and storage.
  • Appropriately utilizes pharmacy software for compounding, packaging, labeling, and dispensing medications.
Examples:
a. Pyxis ES software for medication storage in automated dispensing cabinets. b. Medidose software for extemporaneous packaging. c. Intelliguard MEPS for code tray management. d. Carousel software for drug dispensing, labeling and inventory management.
  • Maintains and troubleshoots automated systems as required.
  • Identifies problems and issues with automated equipment and reports them appropriately.
