JOB SUMMARY
Performs a variety of routine tasks in the laboratory including blood collection by venipuncture and capillary puncture; facilitates and documents the flow of patient specimens in and out of the laboratory; completes patient clerical information. Performs a variety of clerical duties and other duties as assigned. CPT I must meet the regulatory requirements of CA Codes (
Business and Professions Code:
1246); (
California Code of Regulations:
1034) or state regulatory certification requirements to work in the clinical laboratory.
PERFORMANCE DIMENSIONS AND TASKS
Essential Function 1. Obtains venous blood samples as required.a. Checks patient identification before drawing sample and compares with laboratory slip to ensure accuracyb. Follows established policy when drawing blood and labeling specimens.c. Possesses adequate knowledge of the terminology of tests ordered in the laboratory 2. Prepares blood samples for analysis in the laboratory and send outs to reference lab.a. Alerts technologist Clinical Laboratory Scientist when test abnormalities or irregularities are encountered in test orders.b. Verifies that sample is labeled properly per Lab policy manual. 3. Accommodates STAT orders and other orders as requested.a. Responds promptly to orders as they are requested. 4. Logs specimens into the Laboratory information System and prepares report forms and processes charges.a. Charge slips are legible, completed on time and are accurateb. Gives accurate attention to required data and reportsc. Bookkeeping is kept current and submitted on time. 5. Maintains venipuncture supplies requisitions replacements; performs inventory and supply stocking.a. Maintains adequate supply and levels without hoarding.b. Inventories are accurate; orders supply levels on time and stocks accurately.c. Notifies supervisor when unusual increases in stock demands occur, or supplies are back ordered.d. Keeps storage areas, trays, centrifuges, and collection areas clean 6. Charts reports on inpatients and delivers or mails outpatient reports to referring physicians.a. Ensures accuracy and completeness of patient information.b. Prepares reports in accurate manner and in accordance with established procedures. 7. Assists others in the completion of work assignments.a. Willingly helps others in laboratory in completing laboratory assignments or performs other tasks as assigned.b. Responds positively to changes in the work schedule; continually uses time to department advantage. 8. Follows designated infection control procedures.a. Washes hands before and after each patient contact and between tests. 9. Performs miscellaneous clerical duties.a. Consistently and accurately logs information, filing it accurately reports are rarely misfiled.
