Job Summary:
Under the direct supervision of the Nursing Director, the Medical Assistant/phlebotomist is responsible for providing quality clinical and administrative support to healthcare providers while ensuring safe, efficient, and compassionate patient care. The position involves performing phlebotomy, specimen collection, point-of-care testing, patient intake, documentation, and assisting with routine clinical procedures. The Medical Assistant/Phlebotomist role involves maintaining accurate records, regulatory compliance, following safety protocols, and properly handling specimens to ensure accurate test results.
Essential Job Functions, Duties:
Welcome and prepare patients for examinations and procedures. Obtain and document vital signs, height, weight, BMI, and medical history updates. Perform venipuncture or fingerstick techniques. Perform electrocardiograms (EKGs) and point-of-care testing as assigned. Verify patient identity and explain procedures to patients. Label, process, and transport specimens accurately and promptly. Maintain strict adherence to infection control and safety protocols. Monitor patients for adverse reactions during or after blood collection. Document patient information and specimen collection details in electronic health records. Ensure laboratory equipment and supplies are stocked and maintained. Follow quality assurance procedures and regulatory requirements. Collaborate with administrative staff, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals. Maintain patient confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA and organizational policies.
Qualifications Required Education, Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent. Required Certification or License(s): Current Medical Assistant certification (CMA, RMA, CCMA, or equivalent) preferred. Phlebotomy certification (PBT, CPT, or equivalent), if required by state regulations. Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification. Bilingual Spanish preferred Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program required Current Medical Assistant certification (CMA, RMA, CCMA, or equivalent) preferred. Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program or appropriate experience in phlebotomy required Phlebotomy certification (PBT, CPT, or equivalent), if required by state regulations. Knowledge of blood collection techniques and laboratory procedures. Basic computer and data entry skills. Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
