Job Description

Position Description Under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Director, the Laboratory Assistant/Phlebotomist performs phlebotomy procedures and secretarial duties in a prompt, accurate, and reliable manner according to established hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Work assignments and training will require patient involvement with all age populations including neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics. May be required to supervise other lab assistants/phlebotomists with less training or experience. Essential Position Responsibilities The essential position responsibilities are the basis for the 90 day and annual evaluation. This list is intended to describe the general nature and level of work to be performed and not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties required of personnel. 1. Receives written or electronic requests from physicians for routine or special laboratory tests. Always contacts a tech to verify any questionable lab physician order. 2. Performs all assigned laboratory procedures accurately and precisely in a timely manner. 3. Handles telephone communications with courtesy, accuracy, and respect for confidentiality. 4. Performs positive patient identification and accurate specimen handling per established protocols. 5. Maintains knowledge of various needles, anticoagulants, special handling, and preparation of tests that are to be performed on a regular basis. 6. Complies with proper technique in obtaining blood samples. 7. Complies with proper labeling procedure of blood tubes whether using manually written or computer generated labels. 8. Follows the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems and are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance. 9. Assists in charting temperatures. 10. Performs daily calling, faxing, mailing, charting and filing laboratory results accurately. 11. Demonstrates knowledge of and sensitivity to the age specific competencies of all ages including infants, children, adults, and the elderly. 12. Operates Laboratory and Hospital Information System efficiently. 13. Participates in Laboratory Performance Improvement Activities. 14. Adheres to hospital infection control policies and procedures. 15. Adheres to organizational and departmental policies and procedures. 16. Participates in continuing education. 17. Performs all other related assignments and special projects as requested. 18. Supports Evans Memorial Hospital's mission, vision and philosophy. Minimal Qualifications High School graduate or equivalent. Prefer on-site training or equivalent culminating in National Certification as a CLA in accordance with the standards of the Department of Human Resources of Georgia. Phlebotomy certification preferred. Computer and secretarial skills desirable. Current certification in Basic Life Support. Physical/Mental Demands Ability to think and work effectively under stress with frequent interruptions; to move, sit, stand, walk, and bend intermittently throughout the work day. Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Must possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics that will enable the applicant to adequately fulfill the requirements of this position. Use of mechanical and technical equipment required for the responsibilities assigned. External and internal applicants who are/become disabled, must be able to perform the essential position responsibilities unaided or with assistance of a reasonable accommodation to be determined on a case by case basis. Occupational Exposure to Blood borne Pathogens Category I - Routinely involves exposure to blood, body fluids, or airborne particles. Orientation Period Up to 90 days to perform proficiently all essential position responsibilities. The first ninety (90) days this position is assumed is considered the probationary/introductory period, for which the employee is subject to continuous review.
