Job Description

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
(include but are not limited to the following)
  • Collect blood specimens from in-patients and outpatients, remote locations, via venipuncture and skin puncture according to physician orders and applicable regulations, policies and procedures to ensure complete and accurate specimens for testing.
  • Explain collection procedures and provides general testing information as needed to facilitate patient understanding and reduce patient anxiety.
  • Respond to calls from Emergency Room, Nursing units, and Same Day Surgery for specimen collection as needed; procures Medical-surgical patient collections per schedule.
  • Identify all patients according to laboratory policies. Label collection tubes and specimens with computer generated labels.
  • Maintains inventory of department supplies as needed to ensure uninterrupted specimen collection.
  • Document appropriate information (i.e., time, initials, and type of test) in evident computer system. Orders outpatient tests per paper request form.
  • Collect blood cultures and places them into analyzer per protocol.
  • Collect Employee Urine Drug Screen samples per protocol.
  • Assist in training new Phlebotomy employees and students as needed to ensure an efficient and productive staff.
  • Put storeroom deliveries into cupboards. Replenish the drawing room supplies daily.
  • Restock phlebotomy cart daily before leaving shift.
  • Attend meetings regarding Hospital and Laboratory issues in order to keep informed of current lab and hospital policies.
  • Receive and process patient samples.
  • Perform 12-lead EKG tracings and transmits via fax to UIHC cardiology.
  • Print and send laboratory reports to physicians and clinics per laboratory protocol.
  • Maintain appropriate departmental records and filing systems to ensure the expeditious retrieval of information that comply with regulatory regulations.
