Job Description
Title:
Phlebotomist II Shift:
First Responsibilities Perform 25-30 blood draws per shift using straight needles and butterfly needles on patients ranging from pediatric to geriatric. Explain venipuncture, blood draws, and other specimen collection procedures (including urine and fecal specimens) clearly and courteously to patients. Collect, label, and store specimens according to established procedures and test requirements. Match laboratory requisition forms or computer-generated labels to specimen tubes, ensuring 100% accuracy against the physician's orders or scripts. Centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols. Package specimens for transport, including placing samples in the appropriate collection containers or tubes, labeling accurately, and following required temperature and handling procedures to maintain specimen integrity. Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with laboratory standards. Update patient information accurately in the appropriate systems and documentation tools. Understand and fully interpret all physician orders related to laboratory testing. Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all relevant safety and infection control procedures. Attend and complete required annual department trainings. Answer telephone calls, provide laboratory results as appropriate, and respond to inquiries in a professional manner. Support additional testing services, including drug screenings and paternity testing, following all applicable protocols. Assist with front-end tasks such as checking patients out and providing excellent customer service throughout the visit. Essential Skills Minimum of 2-3 years of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting. Valid phlebotomy certification from the state of Illinois. Demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles. Proven experience performing blood draws on pediatric through geriatric patients. High school diploma or GED. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Gurnee, IL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $23.00/hr.
