Our full-service, 357-licensed-bed hospital has served the community for more than 100 years with a variety of services including: Emergency Department; radiology; orthopedics; maternity, pregnancy and childbirth; behavioral health; imaging and lab; genetic counseling; daVinci robotic surgery. As part of Beacon Health System, patients have access to providers not only at this location but can access resources and services from across the entire health system. What You'll Do You will report to the Laboratory Director and be responsible for collecting, accessioning, requisitioning, and processing specimens for testing. You will ensure that laboratory requisitions are completed accurately and properly authorized, while obtaining pertinent patient information for laboratory records and billing purposes. In addition, you will perform general office and clerical duties, phlebotomy procedures, and Point-of-Care testing. Phlebotomy/Lab Assist Job Responsibilities Accession laboratory test requests, verify work for accuracy and completeness, and resolve problematic orders. Process and handle specimens, routing them to the appropriate laboratory sections according to established procedures. Operate the laboratory information system to prepare draw lists and specimen labels and print reports and worksheets. Determine testing priorities and process specimens to meet required turnaround times. Obtain and verify pertinent patient information for laboratory records and billing purposes. Verify information on requisitions and obtain appropriate authorizations. Perform venipuncture, arterial, and capillary specimen collections. Obtain non-blood specimens (body fluids and other materials) and verify specimen integrity. Perform toxicology specimen collections in accordance with regulatory requirements for specimen processing and handling. Perform Point-of-Care testing, as trained and required, and immediately notify physicians of critical laboratory values. Perform the responsibilities of testing personnel for moderate-complexity testing as defined in
CFR 493.1425.
Accurately identify patients and specimens according to established procedures. Prepare specimens and supplies for transport, following applicable shipping regulations. Identify deviations from procedures and document issues as part of the laboratory quality plan. Provide trauma support by delivering blood products to patients, communicating needs to the appropriate laboratory department, and remaining with the patient until dismissed by the physician. Communicate with care providers regarding delays in specimen collection and complications encountered during specimen collection. Document any unusual circumstances. Adhere to established Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) policies and procedures. Utilize available resources to provide guidance and answer questions from clinical staff regarding laboratory procedures and specimen requirements. Assist internal and external customers with questions, concerns, and issues. Answer telephone calls and respond to requests for specimen pickup, courier dispatch, laboratory reports, test orders, and related inquiries. Transport and deliver specimens, reports, supplies, and other laboratory-related items. May serve as a courier, as directed. Maintain appropriate inventory levels of supplies and reagents and place orders as needed. Maintain laboratory cleanliness, clean spills with special attention to body fluid precautions, and dispose of contaminated waste in accordance with OSHA guidelines. Maintain records, reports, and files as required by departmental policies and procedures. Complete other job-related duties, assignments, and special projects as assigned. What You Bring As a Phlebotomy/Lab Assistant, you'll bring a strong foundation of knowledge and skills typically acquired through the successful completion of a high school diploma, with coursework in mathematics and biological sciences preferred. You have experience providing excellent patient care, customer service, or administrative support in a healthcare or office setting, with prior phlebotomy training or experience preferred. You demonstrate attention to detail, accuracy, and the ability to follow established procedures while handling specimens and maintaining laboratory records. You possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, enabling you to work effectively with patients, providers, and team members. You are capable of prioritizing tasks in a fast-paced environment, maintaining confidentiality, and ensuring compliance with laboratory and regulatory requirements. You also qualify as testing personnel for moderate-complexity testing as defined in
CFR 493.1423.
Required Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required; coursework in mathematics and biological sciences preferred. Minimum of one (1) year of patient care, customer service, general office/clerical, or related experience preferred. Completion of a phlebotomy training program preferred. Previous phlebotomy experience preferred.
