OVERVIEW

The Senior Phlebotomist will collect blood specimens from inpatient and outpatient populations, accession and label specimens, and enter patient and specimen information into the laboratory system. This position will also help oversee the phlebotomy area when the supervisor is unavailable, provide daily direction to other phlebotomists and assist with training new team members.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Perform blood draws for inpatient and outpatient populations Respond promptly to STAT requests and prioritize urgent collections Accurately identify patients, label specimens and complete required documentation Accession specimens and enter patient and specimen information into the laboratory system Assist with specimens delivered to the laboratory and support the specimen-processing department Help oversee the phlebotomy area in the supervisor's absence Direct daily assignments and provide support to other phlebotomists Train and orient new phlebotomy staff Assist with patient callbacks and home-draw coordination Review uncollected specimen lists and follow up as needed Monitor supplies and assist with weekly inventory and ordering Cover other areas of the laboratory when needed Maintain patient privacy, confidentiality and professional standards

QUALIFICATIONS

Three or more years of phlebotomy experience preferred Hospital phlebotomy experience strongly preferred Experience drawing patients across all age groups, including pediatric, adult and geriatric populations Experience with inpatient and outpatient blood draws Strong specimen identification, labeling and documentation skills Ability to prioritize STAT and time-sensitive collections Comfortable providing direction and support to other phlebotomists Excellent customer service and communication skills Computer and data-entry skills Ability to maintain confidential patient information High school diploma or equivalent preferred Completion of a certified phlebotomy program preferred Phlebotomy certification is not required
