at Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration in Bangor, Maine, United States Job Description Summary This Medical Technician-Phlebotomy position is located in the Community Based Clinics at the Bangor VA Clinic within the Togus VA Healthcare System. The incumbent carries out duties in phlebotomy and specimen processing and responds to assigned Supervisors and performs work in a clinical laboratory providing a range of blood drawing procedures, waived tests including finger-stick based testing, and other minor test as assigned. Responsibilities The major duties of the job include, but are not limited to: Performs standard diagnostic tests or procedures such as venipuncture and finger stick to collect blood specimens according to written protocols or as directed by the physician or other professional staff. Adheres to safety, infection control, and universal precautions always while drawing blood. Enters all requests into the hospital computer system using multiple formats. Builds manifests for Send Out testing and gathers, aliquots, labels, and packages specimens for courier pickup. Performs all aspects of sample storage, packaging, and other requirements regarding the shipment of diagnostic specimens and infectious substances adhering to Federal DOT (Department of Transportation) and IATA (International Air Transport Association) Regulations. Functions as a resource person and troubleshooter forward and clinic personnel in executing VISTA order entry and results options. Maintains computer files and manually printed order entry forms. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Specialized Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-03 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic, and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled.
