You assist with blood draws and other specimen collections, ensure accurate labeling and handling, support troubleshooting and workflow improvements, and help maintain a safe, compliant, and efficient laboratory environment. As a float phlebotomist, you work at various locations as needed and contribute to a collaborative team that delivers reliable diagnostic services in a fast-paced setting. Responsibilities Perform venipunctures and other blood draws accurately and safely using straight needles and butterfly needles in a fast-paced patient service environment. Collect and process a high volume of specimens daily, typically between 80 and 160 blood draws, while maintaining quality and patient safety standards. Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols. Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accurate patient and test identification. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders, maintaining specimen integrity throughout the process. Verify all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against orders or scripts to ensure 100% accuracy before processing. Package specimens for transport and follow all procedures necessary to maintain proper conditions and integrity during transit. Store specimens at the required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes, ensuring accurate labeling and adherence to protocol. Update patient information in systems accurately and in a timely manner to support proper documentation and reporting. Record maintenance data, perform basic decontamination tasks, and assist in maintaining a clean, safe, and organized work area. Fully understand and interpret physicians' orders to ensure correct test selection and specimen handling. Answer telephone calls, provide information, and read laboratory results as needed to address inquiries in a professional manner. Attend required annual department trainings and remain current with policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements. Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and compliance standards. Assist with troubleshooting, training, and workflow recommendations to improve efficiency and service quality across locations. Work as part of a team within patient service centers, supporting colleagues and contributing to a cooperative, patient-focused environment. Float between multiple assigned locations as needed and complete on-site and safety training at each location. Essential Skills Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required in some states. Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting. Demonstrated proficiency in performing venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles. Experience labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, performing decontamination, and updating patient information. Ability to collect and handle blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures. Strong attention to detail in matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verifying test orders. Ability to follow detailed protocols for labeling, processing, storing, and packaging specimens to maintain integrity. Understanding of and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations and related safety standards. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks. High school diploma or GED with 0-2 years of overall work experience. Strong communication skills to explain procedures clearly and courteously to patients and to respond to inquiries by phone. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume environment while maintaining accuracy and quality. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working in a patient service center, clinical laboratory, or hospital environment. Comfort working as part of a team and collaborating with colleagues across multiple locations. Ability to read and interpret physicians' orders and test scripts accurately. Experience handling a wide range of patient populations and specimen types. Willingness and flexibility to float between multiple sites as operational needs require. Ability to participate in and apply annual departmental training and safety updates. Strong organizational skills to manage high daily draw volumes and multiple tasks simultaneously. Work Environment This role is based in patient service centers and involves working as part of a team in a clinical, fast-paced setting. The position is a float role, requiring travel between multiple locations as assigned. You train on-site at the location where you are assigned, with safety training provided on the first day. Typical work hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. You can expect to perform between 80 and 160 blood draws per day, using standard phlebotomy equipment such as straight needles, butterfly needles, collection tubes, and centrifuges. The environment emphasizes adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations, proper specimen handling and storage, and consistent use of safety protocols. You work collaboratively with a team of healthcare professionals in a structured clinical setting focused on accurate and timely laboratory services. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Burlington, NJ. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.25
