Summary:

The main function of a phlebotomist is to perform blood specimen collection and assist with patient care in a fast-paced Patient Service Center. The role also includes specimen processing, patient registration support, troubleshooting, workflow recommendations, and delivering excellent customer service.

Position Responsibilities:

Perform venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles. Collect, label, centrifuge, process, split, freeze, and package specimens according to established laboratory procedures. Ensure accurate patient identification and specimen labeling. Properly explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients in a courteous and professional manner. Understand and accurately follow physicians' test orders. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all information before processing. Store specimens according to required temperature and transport protocols to maintain specimen integrity. Perform specimen processing and assist with front desk duties, including patient check-in and kiosk assistance as needed. Update patient information and maintain accurate documentation. Follow OSHA, DEP, and laboratory safety regulations. Participate in annual department training. Answer telephone calls and respond to patient and physician inquiries professionally. Perform approximately 40-60 blood draws per day in a high-volume patient service environment. Work collaboratively with a team while providing exceptional patient care, including pediatric patients.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED. Valid Phlebotomy certification (where required by state regulations). Minimum of 6 months of recent experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory, hospital, or patient service center. Pediatric phlebotomy experience preferred. Strong customer service and communication skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to stand for extended periods (up to 8 hours). 0-2 years of relevant experience.
